Job Description:
TJX Europe (trading as TK Maxx and HomeSense) is seeking a senior real estate lawyer to join our growing Legal Department, to support the European business. The role will be based at our European head office campus in Watford, UK.
The role will join an established European real estate legal team. The job holder will partner with TJX Europe’s Property Department and other business functions on a range of real estate matters and will advise all levels of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Partnering with Property and providing legal advice or support on a range of issues and matters, primarily relating to the UK and Ireland, including:
- Executing lease regears/renewals, agreements for lease, leases, etc., including the provision of legal and tactical advice in relation to the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, if relevant
- Supporting Property with service charge and general property disputes, applications for landlord’s consent and general asset management work.
- Providing internal training and legal updates on relevant topics.
- Assisting in the development, implementation and ongoing modernisation of precedents, practices and ways of working.
- Thinking strategically and assisting with the proactive management of real estate legal risk.
- Staying abreast of new real estate laws that may impact TJX Europe’s operations and supporting the business in ensuring compliance.
- Building and maintaining a strong working relationship with the Property Department and the US Legal team.
- Assisting in the management of external counsel relationships and budgets.

Key Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Significant PQE in a reputable law firm and/or an in-house position.
- Solid experience acting for retail landlords or tenants (in a recognised law firm and/or an in-house position).
- Excellent understanding of the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 and experience providing related tactical advice.
- Strong experience of the development aspects of leasing (e.g. pre-lets, conditional agreements for lease) with good knowledge of the typical planning and construction process
- Experience in managing legal advice locally and from other jurisdictions.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with stakeholders at all levels, with an ability to influence.
- Able to operate on complex matters with limited supervision.
- Able to engage a variety of stakeholders and collaborate effectively.
- Excellent commercial awareness, with a pragmatic, solution-based approach to issues, and an ability to think at a risk-focussed level.
