Reporting directly to the Chief Internal Auditor, you will act as their deputy and provide operational leadership across the service. You will lead the day-to-day delivery of our Internal Audit Plans. Alongside the Council, the team provides assurance to a number of important partner organisations including across Lothian Pension Fund and the Edinburgh Integration Joint Board giving the successful candidate exposure to a diverse range of services, governance arrangements and strategic risks.
We are looking for an experienced and credible internal audit leader who can combine strong professional knowledge with effective people and operational management. You will be comfortable exercising professional judgement, managing competing priorities and providing constructive advice and challenge to senior stakeholders.
You must hold a recognised Internal Audit or accountancy qualification and have extensive senior internal audit management experience. You will also bring expert knowledge of the Global Internal Audit Standards including UK Public Sector requirements, governance, risk management and internal control.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone ready to take on a wider service leadership role, influence the future direction of Internal Audit and make a visible contribution to governance and public service delivery across Edinburgh.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
