We’re supporting a leading medical device manufacturer who is looking for an experienced Senior Automation Engineer to join their Technical team.

This is a senior-level position where you’ll take technical ownership of advanced automation and automated assembly projects, from initial concept and equipment specification through to commissioning, validation and full production.

You’ll work with Operations, Quality, R&D, Validation and external automation suppliers, while acting as a technical expert for automated assembly equipment across the site.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead automation and automated assembly equipment projects
  • Manage projects from concept through to production implementation
  • Specify, procure, commission and validate automated manufacturing equipment
  • Lead the introduction of new automation for medical devices and drug-delivery products
  • Develop URS, FDS, DQ, IQ, OQ and PQ documentation
  • Lead FAT and SAT activities
  • Work directly with machine builders, automation suppliers and systems integrators
  • Lead technical and design reviews
  • Implement robotics, servo systems, machine vision, traceability, laser marking and automated inspection
  • Support automated packaging and serialisation projects
  • Lead PFMEA, equipment risk assessments and root-cause investigations
  • Improve equipment performance, productivity, quality and OEE
  • Ensure equipment meets ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR Part 820, GMP and GAMP requirements
  • Mentor junior engineers and manufacturing teams

The position has significant responsibility for supplier management, validation, regulatory compliance and the delivery of complex automation projects.

What we’re looking for

We’re particularly interested in candidates with:

  • 8+ years’ industrial automation engineering experience
  • Strong experience with automated assembly equipment
  • Experience within regulated medical device manufacturing
  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering or a related discipline
  • Experience specifying and implementing custom automation or special-purpose machinery
  • Experience managing machine builders and automation suppliers
  • Robotics, servo motion control and machine vision experience
  • PLC automation experience – Siemens, Rockwell and/or Beckhoff
  • Experience with FAT, SAT and equipment validation
  • Strong understanding of machine safety and risk assessment

Experience delivering automated assembly equipment within regulated medical device manufacturing is a key requirement for the position.

Particularly useful experience

Any experience with the following would be highly beneficial:

  • Mikron automated assembly platforms
  • Harro, Hahn or Hekuma equipment
  • Autoinjectors or injection pens
  • Inhalers
  • Wearable drug-delivery systems
  • Combination products
  • Fanuc, Yushin, KUKA, Campetella or KraussMaffei robotics
  • Cognex or Keyence vision systems
  • MES, traceability and serialisation
  • Minitab, DOE or process capability analysis
