Referment
Referment is working with a legal technology business that helps startups manage company formation, funding and ongoing legal workflows through an online platform. The engineering team is building products used by founders and investors, with current work spanning workflow automation, document generation and AI-enhanced features.
This is a senior backend role in a cross-functional product squad. You will combine hands-on delivery with technical decision-making and mentoring, helping the team modernise and extend a platform where reliability, maintainability and thoughtful design matter.

The Role
- Design and deliver backend services and APIs for customer-facing legal and company-management products.
- Shape architecture and engineering decisions within a Scrum team alongside engineers, product management and design.
- Improve code quality through testing, review, secure development practices and clear documentation.
- Mentor less experienced engineers and help the team adopt pragmatic technical standards.
- Explore appropriate uses of AI while keeping product quality and customer outcomes central.
What We're Looking For

- Strong commercial backend engineering experience, with evidence of owning complex features and technical decisions.
- Experience with modern backend languages, APIs, relational data and cloud-hosted applications.
- A collaborative approach to product development and confidence working with non-engineering colleagues.
- Good judgement around testing, maintainability, security and incremental modernisation.
This could suit a senior backend or platform engineer who enjoys product ownership and mentoring while remaining close to the code.
