About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer II to join our Regional Europe & UK team. In this role, you will be instrumental in driving data-informed and innovative growth strategies that enhance our product offerings within European markets. Your primary focus will be to develop scalable, high-performance backend services that support local financial operations, such as tax payments, savings accounts, and local payment methods. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead technical initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the evolution of Wise into a truly localized product for European customers. Collaborating closely with product managers, designers, data analysts, and risk teams, you will translate business needs into technical solutions that deliver tangible value to our users and support Wise's mission of making international money transfers seamless and affordable.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with proven experience in backend development. Essential qualifications include:
- Expertise in Java and Spring Boot
- Solid understanding of asynchronous messaging systems like Kafka
- Experience working with relational databases, SQL query optimization, and schema design
- Product-oriented mindset
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively
Candidates should demonstrate familiarity with architectural patterns, clean coding practices, and a passion for continuous learning. Prior experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring team members will be highly valued. A strong sense of ownership, problem-solving skills, and the ability to break down complex projects into manageable milestones are important traits for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain high-performance, scalable backend services utilizing Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, and cloud technologies to support European markets.
- Develop account-level features such as tax payments, savings accounts, and local payment integrations tailored for European users.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, data analysts, and risk specialists to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, conducting code reviews, and fostering best practices within the team.
- Drive architectural decisions and contribute to the technical strategy of the Regional Expansion Tribe to support Wise's growth objectives.
- Participate in knowledge sharing initiatives and promote engineering excellence through documentation and best practices.
- Engage with customers through interviews and data analysis to better understand their needs and develop solutions that enhance user experience.
- Document and present data-driven insights and strategic proposals to stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business goals and risk management.
