Senior C# Engineer – Cloud Native Developer Experience
About the Role
At Trainline, we're modernising our backend services to create a more scalable, resilient, and efficient engineering platform through our Cloud Native Acceleration Programme.
As a Senior C# Engineer, you'll:
- Shape the company's cloud-native engineering standards
- Modernise existing .NET services
- Build reusable patterns and automation to accelerate engineering
- Elevate developer experience and platform resilience across Trainline
Success is measured through modernisation of services, technical leadership, collaboration, and adoption of cloud-native practices.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Modernise existing .NET services by containerising applications for Amazon ECS, reducing legacy infrastructure dependencies, and optimising cloud-native operations.
- Design resilient distributed systems by improving health checks, fault tolerance, observability, and runtime behaviour to enhance service reliability and reduce operational incidents.
- Define evolving .NET migrations through reusable service templates, engineering standards, and best practices for:
- Dependency injection
- Configuration
- Logging
- Monitoring
- Deployment
- Develop automation and AI-assisted tooling that speeds up cloud migration by:
- Analysing existing services
- Identifying modernisation opportunities
- Generating infrastructure and deployment scaffolding
- Optimise containerised workloads for performance, resource utilisation, and scalability.
- Drive technical collaboration across Trainline to:
- Adopt cloud-native engineering practices
- Influence technical direction
- Build consensus on migration approaches
- Contribute to CI/CD pipeline and deployment process improvement, enabling faster, safer, and more consistent software delivery.
- Champion cloud-native engineering through:
- Technical leadership
- Documentation
- Design reviews
- Demos
- Mentoring
- Community engagement

Requirements
We're looking for you if you have:
Core Skills
- Strong professional experience with C# and .NET, alongside knowledge of software engineering principles and modern backend architecture.
- Deep understanding of distributed systems, including:
- Resilience patterns, scalability, observability, and performance optimisation.
- Experience creating reusable engineering patterns, frameworks, and shared libraries to improve consistency and developer productivity across teams.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work across engineering teams and influence technical decisions through expertise.
- A passion for improving engineering practices and legacy system modernisation, with a measureable impact on business outcomes.
Infrastructure and Cloud Native Experience
- Terraform (or equivalent) experience in deploying Infrastructure as Code.
- Proficiency with CI/CD methodologies for modern software delivery.
- Hands-on experience building and managing cloud-native applications using containers and orchestration technologies within AWS and Amazon ECS.
AI Experience
- Familiarity with using AI-assisted engineering tools to boost productivity, quality, and software delivery.
- Ability to critique AI outputs with sound judgement.
- Curiosity about AI's evolving landscape and potential applications in engineering workflows, automation, and developer experience—preferably through direct hands-on experience.
