About OmniChat.uk
We build and deliver AI for the architecture, engineering and construction industry. Our clients are some of the leading AEC practices in the UK, Europe and USA. Our platform gives them the tools and training to work with AI in a way that is practical, secure and professionally responsible.
We are eighteen months old with 70 clients and a growing product family. We are bootstrapped but profitable, with every hire funded by revenue, so every one matters. We stay small on purpose: our ambition is to automate what should be automated, starting with ourselves.
The role
This is our second senior engineering role, working directly with the technical co-founder. It exists because the company has reached the point where the most valuable thing we can build is the machinery of the business itself.
You will own two things that sit at the heart of how the company operates and how we deliver to clients:
- Our internal systems. The connections between our platform, our training environment, our billing and our operations currently run through people where they should run through software. Your job is to build the automation layer that replaces that. These are not simple integrations. The systems you connect will have imperfect APIs, incomplete documentation and behaviours that only reveal themselves in production. The automations you build must be bulletproof: exactly-once, idempotent, and reliable enough that nobody has to think about them again. You will own the infrastructure that these workflows run on, from the workflow code down to the Kubernetes cluster it runs in and the fleet of client servers it operates. Where an automation belongs inside our core application rather than beside it, you will work in the application itself.

- Our MCP server practice. We build Model Context Protocol servers that connect our clients' AI to their business systems. This is a growing, revenue-generating part of our offer with an evergreen backlog of work. You will build these servers, deploy and maintain them, and over time turn the practice into a repeatable system of patterns and tooling that our forward-deployed engineers can deliver against. The work is the same discipline as the internal automation: wrapping external systems in a reliable, well-tested interface.
How we build
Our stack is TypeScript, Node, React, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, deployed on Kubernetes and containers. Until now the entire system has had to stay operable by one person. Your arrival changes that constraint. Introducing dedicated infrastructure where it is needed, whether that is a durable workflow engine, a message broker, or something else the problems demand, will be among the first things you lead. We care that each choice is made well and built to last, and prefer to build reliability on boring, well-understood substrate, promoting to heavier machinery only when required.
What we are looking for

Deep backend engineering experience. You have owned production systems that mattered, and you understand distributed systems fundamentals: idempotency, retries, delivery guarantees, where state should live. When something must happen exactly once, you know what that actually takes. You have likely been doing this for six years or more.

Fluency with awkward systems. Much of this work means integrating with third-party platforms whose APIs are not as good as their documentation. You have the patience to take an integration from working to bulletproof.

Comfort working across the full depth of a problem. You will move between designing durable workflow architecture, writing integration code against a difficult API, debugging a headless browser session, and making the occasional change to a React admin console. You do not need to be an expert in all of these, and the frontend in particular is a secondary concern, but you need to be comfortable operating across that range.

Active, daily use of agentic coding tools. Like everyone we hire, you already work with AI as a normal part of how you build software. You understand what these tools are good at, where they fall short, and how to get the best from them.

The judgement to work with real autonomy. You will have a large domain and genuine ownership of it. That requires someone who communicates clearly, makes decisions they can explain, and builds software other people can operate.
What would be a bonus
- Experience deploying MCP servers into production, particularly around authentication, scoping and the security surface of tool-use in real environments.
- Production use of browser automation (Puppeteer, Playwright or similar).
- Familiarity with the AEC industry or with delivering software to professional services firms.
- Experience as an early engineer at a small, growing company.
What we offer
- £80,000 to £100,000 depending on experience.
