About the Job
Are you a senior backend engineer who wants to own the systems that move real money, on a platform still young enough to shape?
We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join one of our core payments squads. You'll work in C#/.NET on AWS, building the event-driven services behind everything Ryft does: taking payments, splitting them between marketplaces and their sellers, moving money out, and keeping all of it correct under load and under regulation.
This is a hands-on senior engineering role. You'll be in the conversation from design through to production, shaping the architecture, writing the code, reviewing your squad's, and owning what you ship once it's live. Our platform is a few years old, not a few decades: there's genuine greenfield alongside services you'll inherit and improve, and the decisions you make this year will still be load-bearing in three.
What You'll Work On
- Payment integrations: building and extending our integrations with acquirers, processors, and alternative payment methods. Each one is a different set of rules, webhooks, and failure modes to model properly.
- Marketplace money movement: splits, balances, fees, payouts, and settlement. This is the part of the platform where being nearly right isn't a category that exists.
- Merchant accounts and onboarding: the services behind automated onboarding, underwriting, and the account lifecycle.
- In-person payments: our card-present estate, terminals, and the flows that connect physical checkouts to the same platform.
- Post-transaction flows: refunds, disputes and chargebacks, reconciliation, and reporting the unglamorous surfaces that merchants judge us on.
- European expansion: new markets, new payment methods, and the platform work that comes with operating in more places.
- The platform itself: our event-driven service estate on AWS, our infrastructure-as-code, our observability, and the tooling that keeps a small team shipping fast.

Responsibilities
- Build and ship: Deliver backend features end-to-end, from design through to production, to a consistently high standard.
- Design for correctness: Write services that behave under retries, partial failure, and concurrency. Idempotency, consistency, and accurate money maths are the job, not edge cases.
- Own it in production: Take real ownership of what you ship instrumentation, alerting, on-call, and incident response in a regulated payments environment.
- Harness AI, stay in control: Use AI-assisted workflows to multiply your output (we invest heavily in them) while remaining in full command of every line you ship.
- Raise the bar: Improve the codebase with every feature. Review well, set conventions, and push our standards forward.
- Contribute to technical direction: Bring your judgement to architectural decisions across the platform, not just inside your own tickets.
- Collaborate: Work day-to-day with your engineering manager, Product, and the other squads to ship secure, scalable payments features.
Experience & Skills Required
- Strong backend engineering: Significant commercial experience building and running production backend services. We work in C#/.NET, so depth there is ideal but if you're excellent in another modern typed language and will get fluent fast, we want to hear from you.
- AWS in production: Hands-on experience running services on AWS containers and serverless alike (ECS/Fargate, Lambda, SNS/SQS, DynamoDB or similar NoSQL) and the operational reality that comes with them.
- Distributed systems judgement: Comfortable reasoning about service boundaries, asynchronous messaging, eventual consistency, and what happens when a downstream provider stops answering.
- Quality instincts: You care about testable design, meaningful test coverage, and API design, and you know when good enough really is good enough.
- AI-augmented, engineer-first: You use AI coding tools effectively to move faster, but you review, understand, and take full ownership of the output. We are not looking for someone who ships code they can't explain.
- Fast, self-directed learner: A track record of getting productive quickly in unfamiliar domains and codebases. Enthusiasm to learn matters more to us than payments knowledge on day one.
- Small-team fit: Comfortable with the flexibility of a scaling team, happy to own problems end-to-end, and ready to turn your hand to whatever gets the product shipped.

Nice to Have
- Payments or fintech experience: Familiarity with the payment value chain, scheme rules, PCI-conscious development, or building in a regulated financial environment.
- Infrastructure ownership: Infrastructure-as-code (CloudFormation, CDK, or Terraform), CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions), and containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes).
- Observability: Experience with metrics, tracing, and alerting — Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, or similar.
- Breadth beyond the backend: Exposure to React or React Native, or experience maintaining published SDKs with external consumers.
