Senior BESS Engineer
London (Hybrid) | UK & International Travel
£70,000 - £90,000 (flexible) + 20% bonus
TGRC is working with a well-established renewable energy business specialising in the development, construction and operation of large-scale solar PV and battery energy storage projects. The business has a significant portfolio across Europe and is backed by a well-capitalised global investment and infrastructure platform, providing the resources and stability of an established organisation alongside an entrepreneurial working environment.
We are seeking a Senior BESS Engineer to act as the technical lead for battery energy storage projects, covering both standalone BESS and co-located solar + storage projects. This is a hands-on technical role spanning the full project lifecycle, from design and procurement through construction, commissioning and operational performance.
The Role
As Senior BESS Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring projects are technically designed, procured, constructed, commissioned and operated to specification, with particular focus on delivering and protecting guaranteed power, energy, availability and round-trip efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical design and development of utility-scale BESS projects, including standalone and co-located solar + storage.
- Define BESS specifications, sizing, architecture and technical interfaces.
- Lead technical evaluation of BESS suppliers and integrators, including technology, performance, safety and warranties.
- Support BESS supply, EPC and LTSA negotiations, including technical schedules and guarantees.
- Oversee technical aspects of construction, commissioning, factory/site testing and performance verification.
- Monitor operational BESS performance, warranties, degradation and contractual guarantees.
- Provide technical input into optimisation, augmentation and end-of-life planning.
- Ensure projects meet relevant safety, regulatory and technical standards.
- Support technical due diligence and advise senior stakeholders on technical risks.

What You'll Need
- 5+ years' experience in utility-scale BESS engineering across design, procurement, construction, commissioning and/or operations.
- Experience within an owner, developer, IPP or technical advisory environment.
- Strong understanding of BESS architecture, including PCS/inverters, EMS/BMS/SCADA, thermal management and fire protection.
- Strong knowledge of BESS performance metrics, degradation and guarantees, including availability, capacity retention and RTE.
- Experience with contractor design reviews, factory acceptance testing, commissioning and performance testing.
- Knowledge of relevant battery safety standards, such as IEC, UL and NFPA 855 or equivalent.
- Engineering degree in electrical, mechanical, chemical, energy or a related discipline.
- Strong analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.
