Work Environment
Full time On-site
Laboratory Based; Kidlington, Oxford, UK.
Travel may be very rarely required, on an ad hoc basis.
Shift Work
- 8.5 hour shift rota basis (inclusive of lunch)
- Weekly Shift Times scheduled each week on a rota & communicated by your Line Manager
- If you require flexible start / end times please advise & we're open to discussing.
About the Role
This is not a standard lab role. Ours is not a standard Histopathology Lab.

Responsibilities
Laboratory Leadership and Operations
- Lead the Routine section, ensuring a high-quality service that meets clinical needs and regulatory standards.
- Oversee technical and scientific operations, providing specialist advice where required.
- Rotate across laboratory sections, including dissection, IHC and Specials.
- Supervise junior staff and support recruitment, appraisals and delivery of laboratory targets.
- Maintain SOPs, competency documents, staff training and CPD.
- Support the quality management system and ensure compliance with laboratory protocols, CoSHH and UKAS requirements.
Sample Collection and Handling
- Receive, label, store and track biological samples accurately.
- Competently complete the specimen workflow, including accessioning, grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy, staining and digitisation.
Quality Control and Assurance
- Lead laboratory quality activities, including QC, EQA, UKAS compliance and audits.
- Resolve technical or quality issues, escalating where required.
Method Development and Validation
- Develop and validate laboratory methods in accordance with ISO 15189:2022, NEQAS and relevant standards.
Research and Development
- Support research into advanced tissue labelling, digitisation and analysis techniques.

- Follow safety, GDPR and UKAS requirements, protecting laboratory personnel, patients and confidential data.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of samples, procedures and results, and produce clear reports for relevant stakeholders.
Other Responsibilities
- Collaborate with laboratory and clinical stakeholders and provide advice on test results.
- Maintain equipment and stock, complete required training and undertake other appropriate duties.
Required Skills and Experience
- Currently HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist - (Mandatory)
- Completed IBMS Higher Specialist Portfolio or a Masters Degree - (Mandatory)
- Minimum of 4 years post-registration experience in a UKAS accredited Histopathology Laboratory - (Mandatory)
- Proof of CPD and competency
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC) experience - (desirable not essential)
- Experience in preparation for UKAS audits and working in a UKAS accredited laboratory.
- Ability to mentor and supervise staff, as well as assist in the management of the provision of a high quality laboratory service
- Awareness of clinical significance of laboratory finding and implications for research projects.
- Ability to provide technical and scientific advice as appropriate, and take further actions if test findings are anomalous or unexpected.
- Familiarity with and ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments
- Strong data analysis skills, including the ability to use statistical software, data visualisation tools, and databases to interpret and report research or diagnostic findings.
- Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance principles, and the ability to implement and maintain quality control and quality assurance measures in the laboratory.
- Capability to develop, validate, and optimise laboratory methods and procedures.
Digital pathology experience is a bonus, not a barrier. If you are curious and driven, we will build that with you.
