This post is Fixed term/Secondment for 12 months to cover maternity leave.

The post holder will act as the Scientific Specialist for Blood Transfusion and Blood Sciences at the WMH site, supporting a BCU-wide service strategy. They will work autonomously within professional boundaries to manage priorities, lead service developments, deliver training, and oversee quality within a multi-skilled team. Working to agreed objectives under the supervision of the Blood Sciences Site Manager, they will contribute to service development projects and collaborate with senior scientists and the Pathology Governance Team to ensure compliance with BCUHB, UKAS/CPA, HTA, BSQR and best practice standards.
Main duties of the job
- Manage a team delivering a comprehensive 24/7 Blood Sciences service across the East transfusion area.
- Support the planning and delivery of the BCU Blood Sciences strategy, ensuring stakeholder needs are met and resources are used efficiently.
- Lead quality, governance, service development and assay performance within a designated speciality, ensuring compliance with the Pathology Quality Management System, UKAS/CPA, HTA, BSQR and best practice standards.
- Oversee technical service delivery, validation, result interpretation, staff performance, equipment management and the implementation of new technologies and processes.
- Contribute to procurement planning and work collaboratively across BCU sites to deliver a safe, effective, equitable and sustainable service.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The post holder will act as the Scientific Specialist for Blood Transfusion at WMH, providing leadership for the delivery, quality, governance and development of a comprehensive 24/7 Blood Sciences service while supporting the wider BCUHB strategy.
Working with the Blood Sciences Site Manager and senior scientific teams across BCUHB, they will lead service improvement, implement strategic developments, manage resources, budgets, staffing and laboratory operations, and ensure compliance with UKAS/CPA, HTA, BSQR, Health Board and Quality Management System requirements.

The role includes responsibility for assay performance, quality assurance, validation, result interpretation, equipment management, procurement, technical innovation, risk management, audit, research, and continuous service improvement. The post holder will ensure the delivery of a safe, effective, equitable and financially sustainable service through effective leadership of scientific and support staff.
They will lead workforce development through recruitment, training, competency assessment, performance management, personal development reviews and the promotion of continuous professional development. They will foster a culture of learning, open communication, collaboration and excellence across Blood Sciences services.
The post holder will act as the lead professional Biomedical Scientist for their speciality, providing expert scientific advice to laboratory, clinical and management teams, while maintaining professional registration and supporting research, audit, governance, health and safety, information governance and quality improvement across the service.
