Overview
We are a small, boutique accountancy practice seeking an experienced and capable Senior Bookkeeper to join us on a part-time basis. This is a varied role with responsibility for both the day-to-day financial management of the practice itself and providing high-quality bookkeeping support to a portfolio of external clients. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently, managing deadlines and taking ownership of the bookkeeping process from transaction processing through to month-end close. They will have a strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping and be confident preparing month-end journals, including payroll journals and associated reconciliations.
This role would suit an experienced bookkeeper who enjoys variety, has excellent attention to detail and is comfortable working in an accountancy practice environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide bookkeeping services to a portfolio of clients and take responsibility for the day-to-day bookkeeping and financial administration of the practice, including:
- Processing purchase and sales invoices.
- Maintaining accurate accounting records and ledgers.
- Processing bank transactions and completing regular bank reconciliations.
- Monitoring and reconciling credit cards and other balance sheet accounts.
- Processing staff expenses and reviewing expense claims.
- Preparing and posting monthly payroll journals, including reconciliation to payroll reports.
- Reconciling control and balance sheet accounts.
- Prepayments and accruals.
- Fixed asset and depreciation journals where required.
- Intercompany and director/shareholder account reconciliations.
- VAT bookkeeping and preparation of VAT return information.
- Maintaining appropriate financial controls and ensuring records are complete and accurate.
- Maintaining accurate debtor and creditor ledgers.
- Preparing bookkeeping records and working papers for year-end accounts.
- Liaising with clients to obtain missing information and resolve queries.
- Identifying discrepancies and investigating and resolving issues promptly.
- Ensuring client deadlines are met consistently.

Systems & Technology
The successful candidate should be comfortable working with cloud accounting systems and associated finance software. The ability to learn new systems quickly is important, as our clients may use a variety of platforms.
Skills and Attributes
- Proven experience working as a bookkeeper, ideally within an accountancy practice or multi-client environment.
- Experience with Xero and/or other cloud accounting platforms.
- Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping.
- Experience preparing month-end journals.
- Experience preparing and posting payroll journals.
- Good understanding of payroll-related balance sheet reconciliations.
- Strong bank reconciliation and balance sheet reconciliation skills.
- Experience with VAT and VAT-related bookkeeping.
- Good knowledge of accruals, prepayments and other routine accounting adjustments.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to communicate confidently with clients and colleagues.
- Good Excel skills.

Desirable
- AAT qualification or equivalent bookkeeping/accounting experience.
- Experience supporting year-end accounts preparation.
- Experience with practice management/accountancy workflow software.
