About The Opportunity
The Role
The Senior Building Surveyor is expected to support their Line Manager and is responsible for handling projects within own level of authority and providing training and guidance to supporting team members.
You will be responsible for the following:
- Inspect and provide advice on the design, construction, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of all types of buildings and sites. Inspections to involve acquisition surveys, condition reports, measured surveys and defect investigations
- Prepare reports, schedules of work, and works specifications
- Undertake large value projects independently with sound knowledge on all aspects of professional consultancy services
- Design and oversee works using recognised building contracts and to current technical standards
- Understand and apply other relevant legislation such as health and safety, party wall, building regulations, and planning
- Play an active part in promoting the company’s services to secure projects and promote the Smithers Purslow brand
- Provide supervision and support to Graduates and Building Surveyors to promote knowledge and understanding
- Comply with the requirements of the Company’s administrative, personnel procedures, and Health & Safety regulations
The Team
Gateley Smithers Purslow is part of Gateley Built Environment, a multidisciplinary consultancy made up of four established specialist businesses: Gateley Hamer, Gateley RJA, Gateley Smithers Purslow, and Gateley Vinden.
Together, we bring more than 600 property specialists together with the property and construction lawyers in Gateley Legal. This gives our clients access to connected expertise across the full property lifecycle, from strategy, funding, and development through to occupation, long-term asset management, and exit.

The Person
Candidates will be able to demonstrate the following attributes:
- BSc Hons in Building Surveying
- Experience and working knowledge of consulting engineering, surveying, architectural & planning practices and procedures supported by an awareness of the latest statutory requirements and technical publications
- Experience in Defect Diagnosis and report writing
- Insurance repair project experience preferred
- Experience in working to deadlines and within budgets on large-scale projects
- Experience and understanding of CDM Regs 2015, Party Wall, and Building Regulation legislation
- Sound mathematical, scientific, and IT skills and the ability to think methodically to problem-solve
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Flexible and variable attitude to work type
