Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Business Analyst who combines deep technical expertise with strong business analysis and business partner engagement skills. This role is ideal for someone who has a background in software development, database engineering, data analysis, or systems integration and is passionate about working directly with users to solve business problems.
The successful candidate will act as the bridge between business teams and technical delivery teams, translating business needs into practical, scalable solutions while bringing hands-on technical insight to the design, analysis, validation, and delivery of digital products and services.
This role requires the ability to independently analyse data, write queries, investigate system behaviour, validate technical designs, and support delivery teams with a detailed understanding of applications, integrations, APIs, and databases.
About bp Shipping Assurance:
The Shipping Assurance function within BP Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) is responsible for helping ensure that vessels, marine operations and associated marine entities meet BP's safety, risk management and operational standards before being approved to support BP business activities. The function operates as a key component of BP's marine assurance and licence-to-operate framework.
Role Responsibilities:
Business Analysis and User Engagement
- Lead business discovery activities to understand business objectives, user needs and operational challenges.
- Facilitate workshops and requirements gathering sessions with business and technical partners.
- Build strong relationships with users, product teams and technical delivery teams.
- Translate business needs into clear, structured and testable requirements.
- Facilitate requirements prioritisation, scope management and solution alignment.
- Identify assumptions, dependencies, risks and constraints early in the delivery process.
- Influence senior partners through evidence-based recommendations and structured decision-making.
Technical Analysis & Solution Design
- Analyse existing applications, data flows, databases and system integrations.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers and product teams to design fit-for-purpose solutions.
- Support API and integration design discussions.
- Produce process maps, data models, workflow diagrams and solution documentation.
- Assess technical feasibility, dependencies, risks and implementation options.
- Act as a trusted advisor to both business and technical partners.
Data & Database Analysis
- Perform sophisticated data analysis using SQL and other analytical tools.
- Investigate data quality issues and identify root causes of business problems.
- Validate data migrations, transformations and integrations.
- Create queries, reports and analytical outputs to support decision-making.
- Understand relational database design, data models and data governance principles.
- Work directly with development and data engineering teams to solve issues.

Agile Delivery and Solution Support
- Partner with Product Managers, Architects and Engineers to shape and refine solutions.
- Support backlog management, prioritisation and sprint planning activities.
- Review technical solutions and challenge assumptions where required.
- Support testing strategy, UAT planning and defect triage.
- Facilitate solution demonstrations and customer reviews.
- Support business readiness, deployment planning and adoption activities.
Testing and Validation
- Define business test scenarios and acceptance criteria.
- Support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activities.
- Validate delivered solutions against business requirements and intended outcomes.
- Support defect management and resolution activities.
Data and Insight
- Use business and operational data to support analysis and decision-making.
- Define and monitor key performance indicators.
- Identify trends, opportunities and areas for improvement through data analysis.
- Present findings in clear and actionable formats for interested parties.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Find opportunities for automation and process optimisation.
- Leverage technical knowledge to simplify workflows and reduce manual effort.
- Support adoption of AI, analytics and digital technologies.
- Promote best practices in business analysis, requirements management and solution delivery.
Essential Experience and Qualifications:
Business Analysis
- Significant experience working as a Business Analyst or Technical Business Analyst in complex technology environments.
- Strong requirements elicitation, documentation and business partner management skills.
- Experience working within Agile delivery frameworks.
- Strong workshop facilitation and communication capabilities.
- Ability to influence business partners at all levels of an organisation.
Technical Capability
- Hands-on experience with SQL and relational databases.
- Practical coding or scripting experience (e.g., Python, JavaScript, C# or similar).
- Experience analysing APIs, integrations and system interfaces.
- Understanding of software development lifecycle and engineering practices.
- Experience working with Azure DevOps, Jira or equivalent delivery tools.
- Ability to solve technical issues through data and system analysis.
Analytical Skills
- Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis abilities.
- Ability to work with large datasets and draw meaningful business insights.
- Experience producing process documentation, data models and solution diagrams.
- Solid attention to detail combined with the ability to see the wider business context.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience working within digital product or platform delivery teams.
- Experience supporting business transformation, organisational change or operational improvement initiatives.
- Experience using data analysis and reporting tools, such as Power BI.
- Knowledge of enterprise architecture, integration and system delivery principles.
- Professional Business Analysis qualification (e.g. BCS, IIBA, ISEB or equivalent).
- Prior experience in the shipping or energy industry would be highly beneficial.
