Role Purpose

We are seeking a Senior C++ Software Engineer to take a leading hands-on role in the development, modernisation, and improvement of Kappture’s point-of-sale terminal platform.

You will design and deliver complex terminal-side features, investigate difficult production issues, and help improve the reliability, maintainability, and testability of an established C++ application.

This role is not limited to maintaining the current platform or delivering within existing practices. We are looking for an engineer who will help accelerate the evolution of the terminal engineering function by improving architecture, diagnostics, automation, testing, and development workflows.

You should be comfortable challenging established approaches where there is evidence that a better method would reduce risk, shorten investigation time, or improve delivery. At the same time, you will understand that change within a mature, operationally critical platform must be introduced carefully and incrementally.

The role requires more than general C++ development experience. You should be able to reason across application code, operating systems, hardware devices, payment integrations, network communication, and backend services. You will regularly work on problems where the visible symptom may originate from a terminal, peripheral, payment device, configuration, service, or unreliable network connection.

You will work closely with other terminal engineers, architects, Product, QA, Platform, and Support. You will provide technical leadership through design, implementation, review, investigation, mentoring, and the introduction of stronger engineering practices.

We expect the successful candidate to help accelerate the adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices within the terminal team. This includes moving beyond individual use of coding assistants to identify, implement, and evaluate repeatable workflows for codebase understanding, test generation, log analysis, documentation, diagnostics, and controlled modernisation.

Deep C++ and systems-engineering capability remains the core requirement. AI should strengthen engineering judgment, investigation quality, and delivery effectiveness rather than replace appropriate design, review, testing, or hardware validation.

The role involves regular work with point-of-sale hardware, payment devices, NFC readers, scanners, printers, and associated peripherals. A Galway-based hybrid arrangement is strongly preferred.

Experienced candidates based elsewhere in Ireland may also be considered where they can travel regularly to Galway and maintain an appropriate remote hardware-development environment.

Candidates must be based in Ireland and able to work regularly from the Galway office or travel to Galway as required for hardware integration and technical collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

Terminal Software Development

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality C++ software within Kappture's point-of-sale terminal platform.
  • Take ownership of complex features from technical discovery through implementation, release, and production support.
  • Develop functionality across ordering, payments, loyalty, customer identification, fulfilment, printing, fiscalisation, and device integration.
  • Work within an established and business-critical codebase, improving it incrementally without compromising operational stability.
  • Review product requirements and technical specifications, identifying risks, missing behaviours, and failure scenarios.
  • Produce clear technical designs for significant terminal changes.
  • Balance immediate customer delivery needs with long-term maintainability and platform health.
  • Use automation and AI-assisted engineering to shorten technical discovery, implementation, and validation cycles.
  • Identify opportunities to improve how terminal requirements are refined, designed, implemented, and verified.
  • Ensure new functionality is designed for automated validation, observability, and operational support from the outset.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Reliability & Distributed Operation

  • Design terminal functionality to operate reliably under intermittent connectivity, service degradation, and partial failure.
  • Improve synchronisation, retry, recovery, and idempotency behaviours across terminal and backend interactions.
  • Investigate race conditions, state inconsistencies, resource-management issues, and difficult-to-reproduce production failures.
  • Ensure terminal processes fail safely and provide useful diagnostics when an external dependency is unavailable.
  • Contribute to improving the reliability of configuration, product, price, operator, and transaction synchronisation.
  • Consider backward compatibility across terminal versions, services, databases, and customer estates.

Payments, Hardware & Peripheral Integration

  • Integrate and support payment devices, barcode scanners, NFC readers, receipt printers, and other terminal peripherals.
  • Work with device SDKs, network APIs, operating-system services, and hardware communication protocols.
  • Develop and diagnose integrations with payment providers such as Adyen and FreedomPay.
  • Support terminal operation across Kappture's existing and future hardware platforms.
  • Analyse device logs, terminal logs, service responses, and network behaviour to establish evidence-based root causes.
  • Work safely within payment and security-sensitive areas of the product.
  • Participate in hands-on investigation, integration, and regression testing using the hardware estate available in the Galway office.
  • Establish repeatable hardware configurations and test environments that can be reproduced by other engineers.

Architecture and Engineering Quality

  • Contribute to the ongoing architecture and modernisation of the terminal platform.
  • Improve separation of concerns, interface design, resource ownership, and error handling.
  • Promote appropriate use of modern C++ practices within the constraints of supported platforms and toolchains.
  • Identify and reduce high-risk technical debt.
  • Produce clear technical documentation and Architecture Decision Records where appropriate.
  • Ensure solutions are understandable and supportable by engineers other than their original author.
  • Participate in architectural and technical-design reviews.

Testing, Release and Production Support

  • Develop and maintain unit, integration, and hardware-aware automated tests.
  • Improve the testability of legacy and tightly coupled areas of the terminal application.
  • Improve automated test coverage across terminal application, service-integration, and hardware boundaries.
  • Help integrate static analysis, automated quality checks, and repeatable validation into the terminal CI/CD process.
  • Design terminal functionality so that critical behaviours can be tested reliably across hardware, firmware, and network conditions.
  • Contribute to regression testing for payments, peripherals, offline operation, and transaction-critical functionality.
  • Participate in pull-request reviews and ensure changes meet agreed engineering standards.
  • Work with QA to define realistic test scenarios across hardware, versions, and network conditions.
  • Support release assessment, rollout planning, and investigation of field issues.
  • Improve logging, telemetry, and diagnostic tooling to reduce the time required to establish root cause.

Hardware-Focused Collaboration

  • Work regularly with the Galway hardware and terminal test environment.
  • Collaborate directly with engineers, QA, and other technical stakeholders on device setup, reproduction, and integration testing.
  • Attend the Galway office more frequently during onboarding, hardware projects, difficult investigations, and significant release activity.
  • For Ireland-based remote arrangements, maintain an agreed representative hardware bench at home.
  • Document device versions, firmware, configuration, and reproduction steps so results can be repeated across environments.
  • Recognise when an issue can be investigated remotely and when physical access to a wider hardware estate is necessary.
