SP Energy Networks is seeking an experienced Senior Cable Design Engineer to join our Transmission Engineering team. This is a senior technical role responsible for developing and delivering engineering solutions for transmission cable projects from feasibility through to detailed design.

You will lead the technical delivery of complex and high-value cable projects, providing specialist engineering expertise across the project lifecycle. Working closely with internal teams, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders, you will ensure designs are safe, compliant, innovative, and aligned with business objectives.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to critical transmission infrastructure projects supporting the UK's transition to a Net Zero future while providing technical leadership and mentoring to developing engineers within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of pre-contract cable system designs and technical solutions for transmission projects.
  • Deliver basic and detailed engineering designs for high-value, complex, and business-critical transmission cable schemes.
  • Promote a strong culture of Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental compliance across all engineering activities.
  • Assess engineering documentation for technical feasibility and compliance with client requirements.
  • Support the preparation of project budgets and cost estimates through robust engineering input.
  • Resolve statutory, land, environmental, and other consent issues relating to underground cable routes.
  • Undertake technical assessment of tender submissions and provide recommendations to project stakeholders.
  • Define cable equipment requirements and ensure compliance with legislation, standards, policies, and operational requirements.
  • Prepare and review cable drawings, technical specifications, and engineering documentation for procurement and construction activities.
  • Support construction and project teams with the resolution of cable-related site issues and technical challenges.
  • Analyse faults and failures and develop solutions to improve reliability and prevent recurrence.
  • Carry out technical evaluations of suppliers and contractors during tender assessments.
  • Prepare project quality documentation and ensure compliance with SP Energy Networks and client quality processes.
  • Drive the adoption of industry best practice, innovative technologies, new equipment, and alternative engineering solutions.
  • Support the evaluation and implementation of new methods, materials, and technologies to improve efficiency, safety, and project performance.
  • Contribute to training needs assessments and support the development and delivery of technical training programmes.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of junior engineers and less experienced colleagues.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated end-to-end engineering solutions.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
