Role: Senior Cable System Designer (HVDC, Offshore projects)

Turner Lovell are recruiting on behalf of a well-established market leader in advanced power transmission technologies, delivering major HVAC and HVDC cable infrastructure projects across Europe and internationally.

With over 30 active projects across Europe ranging in value from £5m to £500m, the company is investing heavily in the future through new manufacturing facilities, expanded engineering capabilities, and the development of its own cable-laying vessel fleet. This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing organisation at the forefront of the global energy transition.

About the Role:

As a Senior Cable System Designer, you will play a key role in the technical assessment, design, and development of HVAC and HVDC cable systems across major transmission and renewable energy projects.

Working closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and project management teams, you will be responsible for producing cable system designs from tender through detailed engineering stages while supporting innovation, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role offers exposure to international projects, collaboration with global engineering teams, and opportunities to witness type testing and manufacturing activities first-hand.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and interpret Employer Requirements and technical specifications for major cable projects.
  • Develop HVAC and HVDC cable system designs for tender and detailed design phases.
  • Perform cable rating calculations and determine conductor sizing for underground and submarine cable systems.
  • Design cable systems for direct buried, ducted, tunnel, HDD, and forced ventilation installations.
  • Calculate thermo-mechanical forces and short-circuit forces across cable routes.
  • Produce sheath bonding diagrams, earthing designs, and associated engineering documentation.
  • Develop inspection and test plans, procedures, and technical reports for HV AC/DC cable systems.
  • Support quality assurance activities, test reporting, and NCR investigations where required.
  • Work closely with R&D teams to support innovation and technology development.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, quality, HSE, and accessory design teams to optimise cable system performance.
  • Engage with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and project stakeholders throughout project delivery.
  • Support engineering managers and project teams in delivering technically compliant cable solutions.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
