Due to increasing client demand for our expertise in acting as Owners Engineer and Principal Designer, Black & Veatch are now hiring a Senior CDM Consultant/Principal Designer to support projects in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to advise clients on their large, utility-scale energy infrastructure projects - with a focus on energy transition technologies like Battery Storage (BESS) and renewable energy such as Solar PV – to ensure compliance with CDM (Construction Design & Management) 2015 regulations.
The role will ideally be based in our London or Glasgow city centre office, with travel to sites around the UK around 3 times per month. We’re open to applicants based anywhere in the UK who can commit to regular travel to project sites around the UK, and some travel to our office locations in London and Glasgow.

Reporting into our Engineering and CDM Compliance Lead EMEA, you’ll work closely with our clients and internal teams to deliver projects in a safe and compliant manner. Black and Veatch set high standards for Health and Safety and are looking for individuals who can undertake the CDM Advisor/Principal Designer role with a professional, constructive, and collaborative approach.
This position requires in-depth knowledge of Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and specifically Principal Designers' roles and responsibilities, as well as familiarization with the Designers and Principal Contractors' roles and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
- Ensure CDM Principal Designers and Designers' roles and responsibilities are fulfilled in accordance with CDM 2015 Regulations requirements.
- Support Black and Veatch in fulfilling the duties of the Principal Designer as defined under CDM 2015 including where necessary carrying out the role of CDM-Advisor to support the client.
- Support Black and Veatch in fulfilling PSDP role on the projects in Ireland when required.
- Liaise with CDM Principal Designers, Clients, and Designers to share any information relevant to planning, management, monitoring, and coordination of the design, construction, and commissioning phases of the project.
- Plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate health and safety in the pre-construction phase. In doing so, they must take account of relevant information (such as an existing health and safety file) that might affect design work carried out both before and after the construction phase has started.
- Help and advise the client in bringing together pre-construction information, and provide the information designers and contractors need to carry out their duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Incorporated Member of the Association for Project Safety (IMaPs).
- Several years’ experience in the construction industry with experience of CDM/Health and Safety issues in construction.
- Excellent working knowledge and understanding of CDM 2015 and appropriate safety legislation in UK and Republic of Ireland.
- Demonstrable previous experience in successfully delivering the Principal Designer and CDM Advisor roles on energy or large-scale industrial projects.
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent and NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
- Full and clean driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
- Chartered Member of Association for Project Safety (CMaPS).
- Membership of Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB).
- Background in engineering or experience with similar engineering consultancies.
- Energy sector experience, particularly renewable energy and battery storage (BESS).
- Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH), or working towards.
- Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) qualifications.
