Senior CI Engineer
Full time permanent position
39 hours per week
Job location: Llay, Wrexham, LL12 0PB.
Unionised site – works in partnership with Unite the Union.
Lead complex, cross-functional improvement projects that deliver measurable and sustained improvements in safety, quality, cost and delivery, aligned to business priorities and Hoshin Kanri objectives. Provide technical guidance and coaching to CI Engineers, Junior CI Engineers and operational teams in Lean and Six Sigma methods. Work with process owners and Finance to validate benefits, embed standard work and sustain improvements, supporting the Head of Continuous Improvement in developing site capability.

Essential Responsibilities
Safety
- Comply with relevant Environment, Health and Safety legislation, company policies, procedures and safe systems of work
- Ensure improvement activities include appropriate risk assessment and engage HSE and operational owners before changes are implemented
- Support accident investigations through structured root-cause analysis and corrective actions, with approval by the designated HSE or operational authority
- Lead 6S assessments, coaching and improvement planning using corporate standards; review scores and challenge overdue actions
- Support area managers in achieving and sustaining the corporate 6S target of 4 or above, with area managers accountable for local standards
Quality
- Lead quality improvement projects with Quality and Engineering, aligned to aerospace standards, customer requirements and approved change controls
- Deliver measurable improvements in Right First Time, defect prevention and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ)
- Lead structured problem-solving using DMAIC, A3, PDCA and Kaizen; verify root causes and demonstrate the effectiveness of corrective actions
- Review data quality, analysis and control plans; ensure process owners accept updated standards and sustain results after handover
Cost
- Identify, assess and deliver cost reduction opportunities through waste elimination, improved flow, productivity and process capability
- Agree baselines, savings calculations and implementation costs with Finance and process owners; track realised benefits and distinguish savings, cost avoidance and capacity released
- Develop value-stream maps and business cases to build an improvement pipeline and recommend priorities
- Strengthen Management Operating System (MOS) routines and measures to expose performance gaps and support sustainable improvement

Delivery
- Independently lead assigned cross-functional projects from charter and baseline through implementation, benefit validation and handover
- Develop process maps, layouts, standard operating procedures and control plans to establish stable, repeatable operations
- Translate agreed Hoshin Kanri priorities into project objectives, measurable targets, milestones and clear stakeholder responsibilities
- Lead project reviews, maintain risks and actions, and escalate resource constraints, delays and decisions to the Head of Continuous Improvement
- Capture lessons learned, standardise successful improvements and promote adoption across relevant business areas
- Select suitable Lean and Six Sigma methods and provide technical guidance and constructive review of other CI engineers’ project work
- Present clear project updates, KPI movement and validated benefits for management reviews and internal or external reporting
- Complete post-implementation reviews with process owners to confirm benefits and controls remain effective and address any deterioration
People
- Demonstrate company values and influence stakeholders to take ownership of improvement and follow through on agreed actions
- Mentor CI Engineers and Junior CI Engineers; deliver practical Lean awareness and problem-solving training to operational teams
- Maintain and develop Lean and Six Sigma knowledge and complete mandatory corporate e-learning and role-related training
- Support the Head of Continuous Improvement with delivery planning and capability development, providing technical leadership across the team

Position Requirements
Essential Criteria:
- Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt as a minimum, with evidence of applying DMAIC to completed improvement projects
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English
- Substantial manufacturing or operational improvement experience, typically four or more years, including independent delivery of CI projects
- Evidence of measurable, sustained improvements and experience validating project benefits with Finance or business owners.
- Practical competence in Lean tools, data analysis, root-cause analysis and control planning
- Experience leading cross-functional teams, facilitating workshops and coaching colleagues
- Strong Microsoft Office and Excel skills, with clear written, verbal and presentation skills

Desirable Criteria:
- Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification, or working towards it
- HNC/HND, degree or equivalent practical experience in engineering, manufacturing or a related discipline
- Experience in aerospace or another regulated manufacturing environment
- Working knowledge of Minitab or equivalent statistical software
- Experience deploying Hoshin Kanri, TPM or site-wide Lean programmes
