The successful candidate will combine strong technical capability with commercial awareness, confident client communication and a practical approach to solving complex engineering challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead civil engineering projects from early feasibility and concept design through to detailed design and construction.
- Prepare and oversee engineering reports, technical studies, specifications and complex design calculations.
- Undertake and coordinate feasibility studies, site investigations and technical assessments.
- Manage project scope, budgets, programmes, resources and change control.
- Coordinate small project teams and multidisciplinary inputs, including contributions from external consultants.
- Attend client, design-team and stakeholder meetings, presenting technical solutions clearly and confidently.
- Liaise directly with clients, contractors, architects, local authorities and other project professionals.
- Carry out quality reviews of calculations, drawings, reports and other project deliverables.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, health and safety requirements, quality procedures and environmental considerations.
- Assess the sustainability and environmental impact of proposed designs.
- Support technical bids and provide engineering input into fee proposals and work-winning activities.
- Coach, mentor and support the development of junior engineers and technicians.
- Promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, innovation and the Design ID Ethos across the team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
