About the Business Division
The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland’s water and wastewater challenges. We keep safe water supplies flowing for future generations, prevent urban flooding, and improve the health of rivers and coastal environments. Our multidisciplinary teams deliver expert solutions across the full project lifecycle – from advisory services to feasibility studies, outline, and detailed design.
Senior Civil Engineer – Water Utilities Division
Overview of the Role
We have opportunities for Senior Civil Engineers in our Manchester and Newcastle offices within the Water Utilities Division. This diverse and stimulating role supports UK water authorities, with a key focus on United Utilities.

You’ll work on an array of projects, including:
- Water treatment
- Water distribution
- Wastewater networks
- Wastewater treatment / recycling
- Pumping stations
Projects cover all phases of the lifecycle—from feasibility through detailed design, construction, commissioning, to handover—providing opportunities for technical excellence and specialist collaboration globally.
Your Impact:
- Lead design submissions ensuring compliance with contract requirements.
- Conduct studies, concept and preliminary designs, and contribute to detailed design.
- Interface with clients and stakeholders to build strong relationships and enhance reputation.
- Collaborate with cross-discipline teams on demanding projects.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with clients and contractors on projects for major UK water utility companies.
- Engage with multidisciplinary design teams across project delivery.
- Prepare andreview design submissions for compliance.
- Deliver client-facing technical expertise and engage in strategic solutions.
Candidate Specification
Essential
- Civil Engineering degree or another relevant qualification.
- Chartered Tier (CESH) or near-chartered status (ICE or equivalent).
- Significant experience in water and/or wastewater engineering design.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong understanding of health, safety, and environmental priorities.
- Proactive approach, with adaptability to shifting project demands.
Desirable
- Strong digital capability (e.g., Civils 3D, GIS, pipeline hydraulics software).
- Contributed to low-carbon initiatives or sustainable solutions.
