Who We Are

Curtins are an employee owned and award winning engineering consultancy. We take pride in the positive impact we make on the world around us and have delivered practical and innovative solutions for over 60 years, building a better future for everyone.

We have a technical team of 30+ people in our Liverpool office, with a mixture of Structures, Civils and Transport planning professionals. The civils team in Liverpool currently consists of 6 people and is growing to accommodate workload. The ideal candidate will slot into the senior level either as a technician or an engineer. However, we are open to an individual who is close to achieving this level but perhaps needs another 6-12 months of further experience. The team has grown in recent years due to a lot of projects requiring input in conjunction with Curtins’ technical masterplanning offer. With a good mix of experience and expertise you will be supported and given the opportunity to grow your engineering abilities as well as the opportunity to support junior members of staff. There will be a clear route for development through either the technician or engineer career path.

The Role

This role offers the opportunity to lead projects, mentor others, and deliver high-quality design solutions. Typically, this person will have consultancy experience.

Our Civil Engineering teams at Curtins do not specialise in any particular design elements, the teams work collaboratively within the office and across our other offices to provide expertise. Some of our engineers work across drainage, highways, earthworks, flood risk, sustainability and masterplanning, and some individuals are considered experts in a single field.

We work on a diverse range of projects including those in healthcare, commercial, industrial, residential and education with project values of up to £100m and more.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

We are well known locally for working on projects like the Festival Gardens, Liverpool Waters & Wirral Waters, Paddington Knowledge Quarter, and landmark buildings such as the Paddington Novotel, Irvine and Mallory offices and the Millers Quay residential site. The Civil Engineering team supports development with highways, drainage, flood risk, earthworks and technical masterplanning amongst other elements.

The Right Fit

You will have experience of leading and managing multiple projects as well as leading on design from concept to construction. Your experience should include all or some to an advanced level of the design elements the Civil Engineering team delivers. We welcome applications from Chartered Engineers or Technicians as well as those on the pathway to Chartership who can demonstrate a clear commitment and plan for achieving it.

Required experience includes:

  • Planning applications, such as drainage strategies.
  • Civil 3D or Hydraulic Design Software (we use Causeway Flow)
  • AutoCAD Software
  • Knowledge of technical approval processes such as S278, S104 and S38 etc.
  • Liaison and engagement with stakeholders

Desirable experience includes:

  • Flood Risk Assessments
  • Residential housing estate design
  • Civil 3D and Hydraulic Design Software (we use Causeway Flow)

Above all the right fit will be guided by the individual, someone who recognises the contribution of others and shares their successes. Someone who is kind, conscientious and has pride in their work and the legacy our profession leaves for everyone.

Projects

To give some insight into the breadth of our projects and typical scope of work we have provided some examples below:

  • Liverpool Waters: for this project we completed a stage 3 design for the Central Docks & Infrastructure which has just gone to site. We are now progressing with a technical advisory role where our engineers review the contractor design proposal. We are also the technical advisor to the landowner for their masterplan ambitions.
  • Millers Quay: for this scheme in Birkenhead we have provided a drainage, levels, earthworks and external works design. This included a flood mitigation strategy.
  • Residential scheme in Moreton: we have provided drainage, levels, earthworks, highways and adoption packs. This included S104, S38 and S278.
  • Multiple schemes in Lancashire: we have provided drainage and flood risk for complex planning applications.
  • New highway infrastructure in Birkenhead: on behalf of the Local Authority. This includes complex signalised junctions and the rerouting of thoroughfares.
  • Lead designer for one of the largest regeneration schemes in Birkenhead: this commission includes our full Civil and Structural offering as part of an enabling works contract.
