The Marine Liability team

The Marine Liability team addresses an extensive range of claims originating from the Marine Liability and Transport and Logistics Underwriting Division. This role requires handling complex lead primary and excess claims with a focus on maintaining solid governance and service standards.

We’re all about people | We win together | We strive for better | We enjoy the everyday | We think further

Who we are:

Business Unit overview:

The Claims department strives to lead the market by offering an efficient, and professional service to brokers and clients. Our goal is to become the most customer-focused, adaptable, and value-driven claims team available. We work proactively and flexibly to handle claims while upholding our integrity. The claims team partners closely with underwriting to ensure open communication and idea sharing. This team plays a key role in delivering products and services to our clients.

The London Market Claims team handles claims from both the company market and Lloyd’s of London, originating from three main areas: Marine, Energy and Construction, PFR or equivalent experience & Cyber, and Specialty. The London Market division underwrites more than $2bn GWP and strives to expand considerably in the coming years.

Part of Markel Group (NYSE – MKL) a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations around the world.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Drive the claims’ philosophy—“The most customer-focused, nimble, and value-adding claims team in the market”—by your individual work and, if applicable, through leading others. Accomplish this by setting and completing your objectives, taking part in team meetings, supervising DCAs and service providers, and interacting with key brokers.
  • Take ownership for handling your claims following the MINT claims and reserving philosophy, Markel Style, the Claims Handling Manual, and all applicable laws and regulations. Bring up claims with your manager as appropriate for advice on strategy or reserving. Observe, review, and ensure targets are met.
  • Drive, facilitate, and deliver a customer-focused approach to claims, measurable through speed of service and open, honest, and personable communications with all brokers and (re)insureds.
  • Produce good quality and informative narratives and information on key claims and claims developments.
  • Work closely with the underwriting team. Provide feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data, or feedback for renewals or new business. Interact with placing and claims brokers to build positive relationships and deepen knowledge about the quality of claims management at Markel.
  • Show a willingness to lead claims across all business types handled by the team. This includes attending underwriting meetings, learning about each class, and building relationships with key collaborators involved in the claims process.
  • Assist the Claims Manager with specific ad hoc projects and provide innovative ways of doing things as required. Be willing to assist beyond the day-to-day claims handling to further develop the team and book of business as a whole.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
