Senior Claims Adjuster - Marine Short Tail Team
As a Senior Claims Adjuster in the Marine Short Tail team, you will join the Markel London Market claims team. Reporting to the Assistant Claims Manager, you will be responsible for leading and driving claims forward in a proactive manner. Markel is a people-powered company, valuing relationships with customers and all stakeholders in the claims process. Your role will be key in maintaining these relationships and promoting our Claims Value Proposition by providing a market-leading service.

The Claims department aims to be a market-leader in providing an efficient, cost-effective, and professional service to brokers and clients. Our vision is to be the most customer-centric, nimble, and value-adding claims team in the market. The Marine Short Tail team handles a broad range of claims from the Marine Cargo, Specie, Hull & War Underwriting Division.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Drive the claim's philosophy of being “The most customer-focused, nimble, and value-adding claims team in the market”.
- Handle claims in accordance with the MINT claims and reserving philosophy, Markel Style, the Claims Handling Manual, and all regulatory and legislative requirements.
- Deliver a customer-focused approach to claims, measurable through speed of service and open, honest, and personable communications with brokers and (re)insureds.
- Produce good quality and informative narratives and information on key claims and developments, ensuring this is brought up to management.
- Work closely with the underwriting team, including providing feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data, or feedback for renewal or new business.
- Collaborate with Actuarial and Outwards Reinsurance teams, ensuring they are informed of new notifications and significant developments.
- Show a willingness to lead claims on all classes of business handled by the team, including attending underwriting meetings and developing relationships with key collaborators.

Key Skills
- Take the lead and management of strategy on a portfolio of complex and/or high-value claims.
- Segment and analyze the portfolio to identify profitable sub-segments and areas needing remedial action.
- Understand, monitor, provide feedback, and ensure compliance on KPIs.
- Analyze and interpret data to improve Markel’s underwriting capabilities.
- Assist underwriters with the development of policy language and propose wording amendments.
- Consistently produce quality work, finding the most efficient and practical means of overcoming challenges.
- Understand customer needs, solicit and act upon feedback, and provide solutions to problems.
- Form relationships outside of the claims function, including with underwriters, brokers, and key legal providers.
- Negotiate complex coverage matters calmly and effectively.
- Represent MINT in the management of market and broker meetings.
- Assist in the training of junior members of the claims team.
Background and Knowledge
- Background and knowledge in Fine Art & Specie is required.
- Knowledge of Marine Cargo is desired.
- You will have achieved ACII accreditation, or be working towards it.
