Senior Claims Adjuster in the Marine Short Tail Team

As a Senior Claims Adjuster in the Marine Short Tail team, you will be joining as an integral part of the Markel London Market claims team. Reporting into the Assistant Claims Manager, you will be responsible for leading and driving claims forward in a proactive manner.

Markel is a people-powered company and we value our relationships, not just with our customers, but with all of the stakeholders in the claims process. Your role will be key in maintaining these relationships and promoting our Claims Value Proposition by providing a market-leading service.

Who We Are

Business Unit Overview: The Claims department seeks to be a market-leader in the provision of an efficient, cost-effective, and professional service to our brokers and clients. Our vision is to be the most customer-centric, nimble, and value-adding claims team in the market. We strive to be proactive and flexible in the management of claims while maintaining our integrity. The claims team works collaboratively alongside the underwriting function to facilitate close communication and exchange of ideas, and is an integral part of the product and customer service delivered to our clients. The Marine Short Tail team handles a broad range of claims emanating from the Marine Cargo, Specie, Hull & War Underwriting Division.

Part of Markel Group (NYSE – MKL), a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations around the world.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Drive, through your own work, the claim's philosophy of being "The most customer-focused, nimble, and value-adding claims team in the market." Achieve this through agreeing, reviewing, and completing your own objectives; your contribution at team meetings; effective oversight of DCAs and service providers; and interaction with key brokers. Passing back any key information in this regard to your team.
  • Be responsible for handling your claims in accordance with the MINT claims and reserving philosophy, Markel Style, the Claims Handling Manual, and all regulatory and legislative requirements. Calling out claims to your manager, where appropriate, for input on strategy and/or reserving.
  • Drive, facilitate, and deliver a customer-focused approach to claims which is measurable through speed of service and open, honest, and personable communications with all brokers and (re)insureds.
  • Produce good quality and informative narratives and information on key claims and claims developments, and ensure this is brought up as appropriate to management (whether to your direct manager or beyond), including provision of narratives for inclusion in your team's monthly/quarterly reports.
  • Work closely with the underwriting team, including providing feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data, or feedback for any renewal or new business and interact with placing and claims brokers to develop strong relationships and knowledge about the quality of our claims management at Markel. Work collaboratively with our Actuarial and Outwards Reinsurance teams, ensuring that they are all informed of new notifications and significant developments.
  • Show a willingness to lead claims on all classes of business handled by the team, including attending underwriting meetings, learning about the class, and developing relationships with key collaborators.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
