Join NorthStandard's Americas & UK team and take the lead on complex P&I claims, providing expert advice, building trusted Member relationships, and delivering solutions that make a real impact across the global maritime industry.

Role Purpose

This role focuses on efficiently handling a variety of P&I claims, including complex cases, while maintaining control over strategies and providing regular updates. You'll build strong relationships with Members and brokers, mentor colleagues, and collaborate with various teams to identify risks and improve processes. Your efforts will ensure Members feel supported and informed throughout the claims process, contributing to a high-performing, inclusive team environment.

What will you be doing?

  • Handle a high volume and variety of P&I claims, including complex and high-value matters, ensuring efficient and cost-effective resolution.
  • Assisting with Member and broker enquiries relating to current geopolitical and industry issues.
  • Appointing and managing a variety of third-party service providers, such as lawyers, surveyors, consultants, and correspondents.
  • Maintain control of P&I claims strategy, taking input from external advisors without ceding control.
  • Provide regular, accurate, and timely reporting on new and ongoing P&I claims to the Head of P&I Claims.
  • Manage relationships with Members and brokers, ensuring high levels of service.
  • Mentor, supervise, and manage colleagues within the P&I Claims function.
  • Collaborate closely with FD&D, Underwriting, and Loss Prevention colleagues to identify risk trends and manage relationships.
  • Prepare agendas, reports, and inform the Sector of significant developments as required.
  • Support business development activities and network with Members and customers, both locally and overseas.
  • Assist with audits and improve claims handling and operational processes.
  • Ensure all duties, including file organisation, internal reporting, adherence to Claims Function procedures, and participation in out-of-hours emergency response, are performed in accordance with established procedures.

About you

Skills/Qualifications/Experience

Essential

  • Degree (preferably in Law) OR equivalent (e.g. Master Mariners Certificate) OR experience gained handling claims in a P&I club or shipping company.
  • Understanding of P&I claims and the P&I insurance industry.
  • Good planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage demanding workloads.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel.

Desirable

  • Willingness to undertake IG PANDIQ exams or read IG PANDIQ material where the material is relevant to the role.
  • IT proficiency.
  • Ability to assist with cases in a controlled, efficient, and cost-effective manner.
