About Deep Signal

Deep Signal is a transcript-based psychological risk screening engine for high-trust roles. Rather than relying on self-report questionnaires — which are fast and cheap, but easy for a motivated individual to game — Deep Signal analyses interview transcripts the way an experienced clinical psychologist would: reading how someone talks about themselves and others to surface patterns that are very difficult to fake. The result is a classification and diagnostic assessment that gives organisations clinical-depth insight into a candidate's psychological risk profile at a fraction of the cost and speed of traditional clinical assessment.

The technology sits at the intersection of clinical psychology, applied AI, and high-stakes vetting — with early interest from cybersecurity hiring, defence and government vetting, and financial services conduct-risk screening. We're an early-stage, founder-led team building something genuinely novel, still forming a lot of its own processes as we go.

The Team

Deep Signal is a small team by design at this stage, operating as an intrinsic part of The Hacking Games:

  • Mark Loftus — clinical psychologist and the architect of Deep Signal, currently the primary source of clinical judgement on the project.
  • A retained technical/AI advisor, running the software development of the scoring pipeline and infrastructure.
  • A newly-created Research Operations Partner role, focused on testing discipline, diagnostics, and documentation behind the scoring pipeline.

Deep Signal sits within the wider organisation (The Hacking Games, currently a team of 20 people) with an existing large-scale cyber-aptitude and talent platform (Haptai), which feeds candidate data into Deep Signal's calibration work.

This role is Deep Signal's first senior clinical hire alongside Mark, and is intended to build genuine clinical depth and independent standing into the team — not to be a junior addition to it.

How This Role Fits In

This role exists to build genuine clinical depth and independent authority alongside Mark: someone who can hold their own view on a transcript and an individual, contribute to how the framework itself evolves, and over time represent Deep Signal's clinical judgement directly to clients, including in government and defence contexts, without everything needing to run through Mark first.

You'll work closely with Mark and, as it's built out, with the Research Operations Partner role, which handles the systematic testing and diagnostic evidence behind the scoring pipeline. Exactly how clinical and technical responsibilities divide day-to-day between these roles is still being shaped as the team grows, and there's a genuine opportunity to help define that as you settle in, rather than stepping into a fixed structure.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

What You Will Do

Candidate Interviewing

  • Interview candidates applying for consequential, high-risk roles.
  • Jointly with Mark, shape and refine the real-life interview protocol, applying real expertise in elicitation methods to ensure the questions we ask are eliciting genuine differentiating signals rather than surface compliance.

Clinical Judgement and Framework Development

  • Review and interpret interview transcripts against Deep Signal's six-dimension mentalising framework, forming independent clinical judgements — including on genuinely ambiguous or borderline cases — rather than simply applying a fixed rubric.
  • Contribute directly to how the framework itself evolves: refining marker definitions, interpreting why a marker isn't firing as expected, and helping resolve genuinely difficult clinical questions, such as distinguishing a valid discrimination (for example, an autistic or alexithymic profile) from a true risk indicator.

Casework and Calibration

  • Take independent ownership of a defined slice of transcript review and case decisions as your judgement is calibrated alongside Mark's, growing in scope and autonomy over time.
  • Contribute clinical expertise to the calibration programme as we build up a larger set of real interview transcripts, helping ensure the data we gather is clinically sound as well as statistically useful.

Client-Facing and External Representation

  • Over time, represent Deep Signal's clinical judgement directly to clients and prospects including, as pilots develop, government and defence buyers, reducing how much currently depends on Mark being personally present.
  • Draft and review client-facing assessment reports, ensuring they reflect genuine clinical rigour and are defensible under scrutiny.

Academic and Validation Links

  • Where you have existing academic relationships (particularly around clinical or forensic psychology, attachment, or mentalising research), help us build toward the validation and peer-review work the framework's long-term credibility depends on.

What We're Looking For

  • Genuine seniority in clinical or forensic psychology, already practising real dispositional or risk-related judgement professionally — this is not a training role, and we're looking for someone who can hold and defend an independent clinical view from day one.
  • Grounding in the Adult Attachment Interview tradition and mentalising theory (Fonagy, Luyten, or equivalent) — familiar enough with the underlying research to engage with it critically, not just apply it.
  • Deep familiarity with Callous Unemotional Disorder, Personality Disorders and personality-level dimensions (Dark Triad), both from personal clinical experience and from the academic and clinical research literature.
  • Comfort with eventually being client-facing under real scrutiny, including with government or defence-sector buyers.
  • Ideally, existing academic research links (for example, UCL, King's College London, or equivalent) that could support Deep Signal's longer-term validation programme.
  • A genuine appetite for the ambiguity of an early-stage, still-forming venture — this is a different environment from an established clinical service or academic post, and it's worth being honest with yourself about whether that's genuinely appealing rather than merely tolerable.

You Might Come From

  • Secure forensic clinical services, where you've been directly involved in dispositional or risk assessment.
  • Expert witness work in forensic or clinical psychology.
  • Senior executive, board-level, or high-trust-sector psychometric assessment and consulting.
  • Academic clinical or forensic psychology research with a strong applied or consulting dimension, ideally with direct experience of attachment-based or mentalising-based assessment methods.

What Success Looks Like in the First Few Months

  • You've reviewed a meaningful number of real transcripts alongside Mark, and there's a genuine, evidenced record of where your independent clinical judgement agreed, and where it usefully diverged.
  • You’ve conducted multiple interviews, run the Deep Signal analyses and formulated client-facing reports.
  • You've taken ownership of a defined slice of casework independently.
  • You've contributed directly to at least one consequential decision about how the framework or protocol should evolve.

Future Prospects

This is a genuine opportunity to build lasting clinical authority and ownership within Deep Signal, not to fill a defined slot within an already-settled structure. As the business grows, there's real scope for this role to become the clinical face of Deep Signal — leading its clinical judgement independently, shaping the framework as it matures, and representing it externally at the highest levels, including with government and defence clients. Exactly how this role's scope, seniority, and relationship to the rest of the team develops will be a genuine, ongoing conversation as Deep Signal grows, rather than a fixed script — and we're looking for someone who wants a real hand in shaping that, not just occupying it.
