Role Scope
The Senior Commercial Analyst is responsible for leading and delivering complex commercial activities, driving value through strategic analysis and owning key commercial workstreams. The role operates with a high degree of autonomy and is accountable for influencing and shaping commercial outcomes across projects and business initiatives.
Role Positioning
The role is a senior individual contributor and workstream ownership role. It is accountable for shaping commercial thinking, delivering complex analysis, influencing senior stakeholders and building scalable analytical tools and models that improve commercial decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
1. Commercial Ownership
Lead and deliver end-to-end analytics workstreams across new business, due diligence, implementations and strategic projects. Take accountability for commercial outcomes including cost savings, value creation and risk mitigation. Develop and implement commercial strategies aligned with business objectives.

2. Strategic Analysis and Insight
Conduct advanced financial and commercial analysis to support decision-making. Translate complex data into clear, actionable insights. Identify opportunities for cost optimisation, efficiency improvement and value creation.

- Cost optimisation analysis
- Board or governance-ready summaries
3. Decision-Making and Influence
Operate with autonomy in day-to-day commercial decisions within delegated authority. Provide expert recommendations that materially influence business outcomes. Challenge assumptions and shape commercial thinking across stakeholders.

4. Stakeholder Engagement
Engage directly with senior stakeholders, including Heads of and Directors. Build credible relationships to influence decisions and drive alignment. Represent the Sourcing and Analytics functions in cross-functional initiatives and governance forums.

5. Project and Programme Delivery
Lead commercial input into large, complex or high-value projects. Manage competing priorities and deliver within ambiguous or fast-paced environments. Ensure delivery of commercial targets, timelines and quality standards.

6. Risk Management
Identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities. Apply appropriate controls, governance and compliance. Support negotiation strategies and supplier engagement where relevant.

7. Leadership and Capability
Act as a subject matter expert within the team. Provide guidance, mentoring and support to junior analysts or peers, helping to build commercial capability and analytical standards.

8. Technology and Process
Establish and steer bespoke tools, models, frameworks and best practice. Support technology-led system development, build proof-of-concept tools, maintain automated analytics, develop VBA solutions and data pipelines, translate commercial requirements into scalable technical solutions and evaluate emerging technologies and AI solutions.

Key Skills and Experience
- Significant experience in commercial analysis, sourcing, procurement or related commercial environments.
- Proven track record of delivering high-value commercial outcomes, including cost savings, value creation and risk mitigation.
- Strong analytical capability with ability to build, review and explain complex financial and commercial models.
- Experience operating in complex, high-value and ambiguous environments, with ability to prioritise and lead delivery independently.
- Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills, including confidence engaging with senior stakeholders.
- Ability to challenge assumptions, shape commercial thinking and provide clear evidence-based recommendations.
- Experience developing tools, automation, dashboards, VBA solutions, data pipelines, process improvements or proof-of-concept analytics solutions.
- Understanding of emerging technologies and AI-enabled opportunities to improve efficiency, insight quality and scalability.

Role Scope and Accountability
Work Scope
Owns complex commercial analytics workstreams and leads delivery across new business, due diligence, implementations and strategic projects.
Strategic approvals, contractual commitments and final business decisions remain with the appropriate accountable senior leader.
Decision-Making
Makes day-to-day commercial decisions within delegated authority and provides recommendations that influence outcomes.
Decisions outside delegated authority, policy exceptions or material risk acceptance require senior escalation.
Commercial Outcomes
Accountable for delivering high-quality analysis that drives cost savings, value creation, risk mitigation and stakeholder confidence.
Ultimate ownership of business case approval, supplier commitment or client/commercial sign-off follows agreed governance.
Technology and Tools
Builds and maintains models, automation, VBA tools, proof-of-concept solutions and scalable analytical approaches.
Production deployment, system architecture changes or technology/platform decisions require technical and governance approval.
Leadership
Acts as a subject matter expert and provides guidance, mentoring and peer support.
Formal people-management decisions, performance actions and HR processes remain with line management and HR governance.
