Senior Commercial Development Underwriter
Location: Hampshire/Dorset (Remote)
Employment Type: Permanent
Full Time | Salary: £80,000 per annum +
Role Overview
Lawes is delighted to be partnering with a leading MGA that is continuing to grow and is now looking to appoint an experienced Commercial Development Underwriter.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys developing broker relationships, taking ownership of their portfolio and making sound commercial underwriting decisions. The role offers a high degree of autonomy, remote working, flexibility and clear opportunities for long-term career development.
The Opportunity
You’ll be responsible for managing and developing an established portfolio of key brokers across the Hampshire to Dorset region. Working closely with the wider management team, you’ll have the autonomy to make underwriting decisions while playing an important role in maintaining and growing the MGA’s broker network.
The position is remote-based, with travel to meet brokers and clients across the region where required.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Underwrite new SME and mid-market commercial business across property and liability
- Assess renewals, adjustments and endorsements
- Make commercially sound underwriting decisions within agreed authority levels
- Manage your workload effectively and ensure transactions are processed within required timescales
- Build and maintain productive, long-term relationships with key brokers
- Deal with underwriting queries and work collaboratively with internal teams to find effective solutions
- Meet with brokers where appropriate to strengthen existing relationships and identify new opportunities
- Keep up to date with market developments, regulatory requirements and underwriting guidelines
- Contribute to wider projects and initiatives across the business
What We’re Looking For
We’re keen to hear from commercially minded underwriters who are confident operating independently and who genuinely enjoy working with brokers.

Ideally, you’ll bring:
- At least 5 years’ experience within commercial underwriting
- Strong knowledge of commercial underwriting processes and practices
- Experience underwriting SME and/or mid-market risks
- The ability to analyse risks and make confident, well-informed decisions
- Strong relationship management and communication skills
- Excellent negotiation skills and a proactive approach
- The ability to work autonomously within a remote-based environment
- A good understanding of current market conditions and underwriting standards
- Progress towards CII qualifications would be advantageous
