Senior Commercial Development Underwriter
Location: Edinburgh (Remote)

Full Time | Salary: £80,000 per annum +
Role Overview
Lawes is pleased to be working with a growing and well-established MGA that is looking to strengthen its team with the appointment of an experienced Commercial Development Underwriter.
This is a great opportunity for a commercially focused underwriter who enjoys building strong broker relationships, managing their own portfolio and having the freedom to make confident underwriting decisions. The role offers remote working, flexibility, autonomy and excellent scope for continued career development.
The Opportunity
You’ll take responsibility for developing and managing an established broker portfolio across Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. Working alongside an experienced management team, you’ll have the independence to make underwriting decisions while playing a key part in developing existing relationships and identifying new business opportunities.
The role will be based in Edinburgh, with travel required to meet with brokers and clients across the surrounding area where appropriate.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Underwrite new SME and mid-market commercial risks across property and liability
- Review and assess renewals, endorsements and policy adjustments
- Make informed and commercially focused underwriting decisions within your authority
- Manage your pipeline effectively and ensure business is handled within agreed timescales
- Develop and maintain strong, long-standing relationships with brokers
- Work closely with internal teams to resolve underwriting queries and deliver effective solutions
- Attend broker meetings and visits where appropriate to strengthen relationships and support business development
- Keep informed of regulatory changes, market conditions and underwriting guidelines
- Get involved in wider business projects and initiatives as required
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an experienced commercial underwriter who is confident working independently, has a strong commercial outlook and enjoys developing meaningful broker relationships.

Ideally, you’ll bring:
- 5+ years’ experience in commercial underwriting
- A solid understanding of commercial underwriting processes and practices
- Experience handling SME and/or mid-market commercial accounts
- Strong analytical skills with the confidence to make sound underwriting decisions
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills
- Strong negotiation skills and a proactive, solutions-focused approach
- The ability to work effectively and independently in a remote environment
- An understanding of current market trends, regulations and underwriting standards
- Progress towards CII qualifications would be beneficial
