Role Overview
The Senior Commissioning Engineer is responsible for leading the end-to-end commissioning of Fluence energy storage projects across EMEA and globally. This critical role ensures that all systems are tested, validated, and integrated in accordance with:
- Technical standards
- Contractual requirements
- Grid regulations
Working cross-functionally with construction, engineering, contractors, and external stakeholders, the Senior Commissioning Engineer drives commissioning strategy, planning, and execution, ensuring quality, safety, and performance at every stage.
The role plays a key part in transitioning projects from construction to operations, delivering fully commissioned, compliant, and operational energy storage systems.
Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Lead the commissioning of Fluence projects, coordinating with:
- Fluence construction managers
- Contractors & suppliers
- Telecommunication teams
- Control systems teams
- (and other project stakeholders)
- Develop and execute commissioning plans, including resourcing and scheduling
- Oversee the transition from delivery/construction to O&M (Operations & Maintenance) team for each project
- Define and execute testing protocols based on:
- Market rules & local utility requirements
- Off-taker and third-party supply contract specifications
- Oversee commissioning and acceptance testing of:
- Project networks, communications, and control systems
- Balance of plant (relay protection, metering, HVAC, fire suppression, electrical systems)
- Battery subsystem
- Inverter subsystem
- Conduct electricity market/off-taker qualification testing where necessary
- Travel extensively within EMEA and internationally

Qualifications & Experience
Essential Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in electrical engineering (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) or equivalent training
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in energy storage or related engineering fields
- In-depth knowledge of:
- Battery storage systems
- Inverters
- Switchgear (low and medium voltage systems)
- Excellent understanding of battery energy storage related standards and regulations, including:
- VDE, IEC, IEEE standards (general)
- Willingness to develop and continuously improve professional skills
- Strong ability to convince and influence through:

- High standards of quality awareness
- Professional reporting and excellent communication skills, both:
- Verbally & in writing
- Fluent in English and German
