The opportunity
We are recruiting an experienced Senior Community Project Manager to help Badu make sound decisions about which projects we take on and how they are planned, funded and delivered. This is a senior, hands-on role for someone who understands both community impact and financial sustainability. You will work with the Head of Community, Badu colleagues and external partners to turn ideas into viable projects. You will test budgets, identify risk, challenge unrealistic assumptions and make clear recommendations before Badu commits time or money.
Once a project is approved, you will coordinate it from mobilisation through delivery, evaluation and closure, ensuring that commitments to communities, partners and funders are met.
What you will be responsible for
- Assessing whether proposed projects are strategically aligned, properly funded and operationally achievable.
- Working with colleagues to turn community needs and staff ideas into clear, costed project proposals.
- Building project budgets that include staffing, employer costs, venues, equipment, administration, management time and an appropriate contribution towards Badu's overheads.
- Completing break-even, margin and scenario analysis before recommending whether projects should proceed.
- Identifying financial, operational, safeguarding, reputational and delivery risks and ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
- Working with funders, local authorities, corporate partners, community organisations and delivery partners to agree realistic scope, outcomes, responsibilities, budgets and timescales.
- Challenging or renegotiating partner requests where funding, capacity or delivery expectations are unrealistic.
- Managing approved projects against agreed plans, budgets, milestones and outcomes.
- Monitoring income, expenditure, forecasts and project contribution throughout delivery.
- Maintaining accurate project plans, risk registers, risk management of projects, action logs, budget trackers and decision records.
- Coordinating high-quality reporting for Badu's leadership, funders and partners.
- Capturing project learning and using it to improve future decisions and delivery.

Who we are looking for
You will bring substantial project-management experience and a professional background in sport or physical activity. You will be commercially aware, community-minded and confident making recommendations that protect both Badu's impact and its financial sustainability.
You must have
- At least five years' substantial project-management experience.
- Professional experience within sport or physical activity.
- Experience managing community, sport, health, youth or social-impact projects from concept to completion.
- Strong experience developing and managing detailed project budgets.
- A practical understanding of direct costs, overhead recovery, break-even analysis and financial forecasting.
- Experience working with grants, commissioned services, partnership agreements or restricted project income.
- Experience leading or contributing to partner negotiations and project-scoping meetings.
- The confidence to question budgets, challenge unrealistic assumptions and recommend that unsuitable opportunities are declined or renegotiated.
- Strong organisation, stakeholder-management, written communication and reporting skills.
- A sound understanding of safeguarding within sport or community settings.
It would be helpful if you also have
- A recognised qualification in project management, sport management or a related discipline.
- Experience within a CIC, charity, social enterprise or community anchor organisation.
- Experience working with Sport England, local authorities, trusts, foundations or corporate partners.
- Knowledge of East London's sport and community landscape.
- Experience managing community events or multi-partner initiatives.
What success will look like
- New opportunities are assessed using consistent financial, operational and risk criteria.
- Projects are approved with complete plans, realistic budgets and clear responsibilities.
- Project budgets recover the true cost of delivery and make an appropriate contribution towards Badu's overheads.
- Approved projects are delivered within scope, budget and timetable.
- Funder and partner commitments are achieved and evidenced.
- Financial or operational problems are identified early and acted upon.
- The Head of Community has reliable information on project progress, finances and risk.

About the contract
This is a newly created role offered as a six-month fixed-term pilot. A formal review will take place during the fourth month to assess the value of the role, Badu's project pipeline, financial sustainability and longer-term organisational need. There may be an opportunity for the contract to be extended or for the role to become permanent. However, neither an extension nor a permanent appointment can be guaranteed.
Working pattern
The postholder will work 22.5 hours per week across Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This is a fully site-based role at Badu's offices in Here East, with attendance at partner meetings and community delivery locations as required.
Occasional agreed evening or weekend work may be required for projects and community events, with working hours adjusted accordingly.
