Summary

The post holder acts as a Senior Urology/Continence Nursing Services Specialist providing specialist support and advice on all aspects of bladder and bowel care within a National Spinal Injuries Centre.

Location: Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury

Contract: Permanent, working Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours

Responsibilities

People Management

Together With The Nurse Manager The Post Holder Will:

  • Provide professional leadership, support and supervision to Clinical Nurse Specialists, Clinical Nurse Advisors, Nursing Associates and other nursing colleagues as required
  • Participate in recruitment, induction, competency assessment and retention of nursing staff.
  • Undertake or support appraisal processes, personal development planning and performance review activities
  • Support workforce planning, succession planning and development of future clinical leaders
  • Promote staff wellbeing, psychological safety and an inclusive working culture
  • Ensure staff maintain NMC registration, mandatory training and role-specific competencies

Service Management

Together With The Nurse Manager, The Post Holder Will:

  • Contribute to the operational management of specialist bladder, bowel and continence services
  • Monitor referral activity, caseload allocation, waiting times and service capacity
  • Support service delivery planning to ensure safe and effective patient care
  • Contribute to activity reporting, performance monitoring and achievement of agreed service objectives
  • Identify risks to service delivery and implement appropriate escalation and mitigation plans
  • Support the development of service improvement initiatives and clinical pathway optimisation

Clinical Governance, Quality and Risk Management

Together With The Nurse Manager The Post Holder Will:

  • Contribute to clinical governance frameworks and quality assurance activities
  • Support incident reporting, complaint management, safeguarding processes and duty of candour requirements
  • Participate in audit programmes, quality improvement projects and implementation of lessons learned
  • Ensure clinical documentation, patient information and standard operating procedures remain compliant and evidence based
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory requirements including NMC standards, CQC regulations, information governance and safeguarding guidance
  • Support inspection readiness and quality assurance reviews where required

Education, Competency and Workforce Development

Together With The Nurse Manager The Post Holder Will:

  • Support development and delivery of competency frameworks relating to bladder, bowel and continence care
  • Provide clinical supervision, mentorship and coaching to nursing colleagues
  • Contribute to educational programmes for healthcare professionals, patients and carers
  • Promote reflective practice, continuing professional development and evidence-based care
  • Support competency assessment and sign-off processes within the clinical nursing team

Advanced Assessment and Diagnostic Support

Where appropriately trained and within scope of practice, the post holder will:

  • Support bladder assessment pathways including intermittent self-catheterisation, catheter management and continence assessment
  • Contribute to urodynamic and diagnostic service activities where commissioned
  • Support development of patient pathways, safety-netting processes and follow-up arrangements
  • Ensure diagnostic activity is accurately recorded and acted upon appropriately

Strategic Service Development

Together With The Nurse Manager The Post Holder Will:

  • Contribute to service development, pathway redesign and innovation programmes.
  • Support the development of business cases, service proposals and improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects using audit findings, patient outcomes and patient feedback.
  • Promote publication, presentation and dissemination of service outcomes and best practice.

Financial and Performance Responsibilities

Together With The Nurse Manager The Post Holder Will:

  • Support effective utilisation of clinical resources and service capacity
  • Contribute to monitoring of key performance indicators and service outcomes
  • Assist with collection and reporting of activity, productivity and quality metrics
  • Support achievement of contractual requirements and service objectives
  • Promote cost-effective, clinically appropriate use of products and resources

Essential Functions Of The Role

  • Valid NMC PIN
  • Proven experience and keen interest within Urology / Continence Care

Work Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years nursing experience
  • Experience of presenting and/or publishing
  • Can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the development of a quality service
  • Ability to manage staff and demonstrate professional and managerial credibility
  • Computer literate
  • Experience of/involvement in CQC Regulations

Education Requirements

  • Qualified Nurse RGN (essential)
  • Recognised Continence Care / Urology Qualification (desirable)
  • Evidence of recent post registration training and development (desirable)

Specialised Skills/Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate a research based holistic approach to patient care
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate current Stoma Care nursing practice or Continence Care nursing practice and statutory requirements
  • Knowledge and understanding of new NHS and priorities of key stakeholders
  • An understanding of financial control and ability to manage a service within its budget
  • Able to demonstrate leadership skills
  • Consistently able to meet deadlines
  • Ability to keep up to date with educational, professional, and clinical developments.
  • Can establish, organize and manage multiple priorities, sometimes in addition to own workload
  • Good communication skills across all levels and disciplines within the organization, with families and other members of the public
  • Can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the development of the service
  • Ability to manage staff and demonstrate professional and managerial credibility
  • Commitment to professional development

  • The anticipated base salary range for this position is £46,000 - £56,000, depending on experience or other legitimate business factors
