I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About The Role
As a Senior Complex Systems Engineer (Grade 4), you will play a key role in delivering high-quality engineering support across submarine combat systems and mission-critical underwater complex systems. You will operate within a specialist team of Mission and Complex Systems engineers and consultants, contributing to the successful delivery of engineering projects or sub-projects of varying scope, scale, and technical complexity.
Working both independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams, you will be engaged throughout the full lifecycle of customer delivery. You will collaborate closely with Project Managers to shape delivery approaches, identify and mitigate risks, develop robust project plans, and monitor and report progress against agreed schedules. You will also help to ensure effective stakeholder engagement and communication at all stages of project delivery.
In partnership with our customers, you will support the achievement of key project milestones and deliverables, particularly in relation to sustaining in-service capabilities and developing the next generation of complex submarine combat system solutions.
Drawing on BMT’s extensive experience in defence-related engineering, including the management and operational employment of advanced submarine combat systems, you will also contribute to the expansion of our consultancy and engineering services into emerging non-defence underwater complex system domains.
About You

Ideally you will have knowledge and experience in the design, procurement, delivery into service and support of complex submarine combat systems, along with a solid understanding of MOD business processes relevant to combat and mission systems engineering.
