Human Reliability Associates (HRA), founded in 1982, is a leading human factors consultancy focused on protecting safety-critical organizations from human error risks. The company pioneered the SHERPA methodology in 1986 and has over four decades of experience delivering significant safety and operational improvements. HRA works with upper and lower tier COMAH sites across the UK and with global clients in oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, transport, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare. Through its Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA) approach and integrated SHERPA software, HRA helps clients reduce human error incidents, improve safety performance, and increase efficiency. The organization provides CIEHF-accredited training and ongoing support, emphasizing practical, cost-effective solutions and sustainable improvement.

Role Description

The Senior Consultant role is a full-time hybrid position based in near to Ormskirk in North West UK with flexibility for some work from home. The individual in this role will lead and deliver human factors risk management projects, including Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA), SHERPA-based assessments, and human error risk evaluations for safety-critical clients. Day-to-day activities include conducting site visits, facilitating workshops, analysing work processes, preparing clear reports, and presenting findings and recommendations to client stakeholders at various levels. The Senior Consultant will collaborate closely with client teams to design and implement practical interventions, support integration of HRA tools and software, and contribute to developing and delivering CIEHF-accredited training. The role also involves mentoring junior consultants, supporting business development activities, and maintaining strong long-term client relationships.

  • Strong background in human factors, ergonomics, or safety engineering, with experience applying these disciplines in safety-critical industries (e.g., oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, transport, pharma, healthcare).
  • Demonstrated expertise in human error analysis methods, Safety Critical Task Analysis (SCTA), SHERPA or similar methodologies, and risk assessment techniques.
  • Advanced analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret complex technical information and translate it into practical recommendations.
  • Excellent consulting skills, including stakeholder engagement, workshop facilitation, and the ability to influence and support diverse teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for producing high-quality reports, documentation, and client presentations.
  • Proven project management experience, including planning, scheduling, and delivering projects on time and within scope.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment, combining on-site work in Dalton and client locations with remote collaboration.
  • Relevant degree in human factors, psychology, engineering, safety management, or a related discipline; postgraduate qualification or professional accreditation (e.g., CIEHF) is advantageous.
