Role Description
The main element of the role will be to provide strategic advice on energy and sustainability strategies within the built environment for both public and private sector clients. Projects will include both new build and refurbished schemes. The role will require in-depth technical knowledge across all strands of environmental design (operational energy, embodied carbon, water, materials etc) in addition to exemplar interpersonal, organisational and management skills. In addition, you will be expected to contribute to the development of the business through involvement in writing fee proposals, attending project interviews and fostering business relationships with both existing and new clients. This is ideally a hybrid role, with some time spent in our London office, but we are open to flexible working arrangements for the right candidate.
Responsibilities - General
- Agree level of service and project outputs with Lead for each project, including understanding the scope, timescales and target profitability of each project.
- Take ownership of the delivery of your service, working alongside the Project Lead.
- Manage the budget of individual projects including reporting to the management team on costs and progress.
- Attend project meetings as required and present findings / progress reports.
- Support, assist and deputise to other members of Twin&Earth as workload and/or circumstances require.
- Mentor more junior members of staff and ensure that Twin&Earth’s sustainability ethos is maintained across the team.
- Maintain excellent client and team relationships to achieve high levels of satisfaction and repeat business.
- Develop project proposals and attend project interviews and presentations as required.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities where appropriate with existing and new clients.
- Maintain and develop professional knowledge of energy, carbon and sustainability technologies, processes and legislation and communicate the impacts to clients and project design teams.

Responsibilities - Technical
The successful candidate is expected to have sufficient knowledge and project experience to undertake a Senior Consultant role within Twin&Earth. Technical responsibilities will include the following:
- Undertake energy performance modelling of buildings and infrastructure to evaluate feasibility and compliance against national standards, industry guidance and client targets including for commercial and residential developments:
- Compliance energy models including Part L and EPC.
- Thermal modelling to assess indoor environmental conditions (e.g. daylight, overheating, thermal comfort).
- Develop and implement energy and sustainability strategies for projects which explore best practice sustainable initiatives across a wide range of themes including (Net) Zero Carbon, building certification, health and wellbeing and social value.
- Advise on building strategies that maximise passive design principles.
- Maintain knowledge of low carbon technologies and design strategies with a particular focus on (Net) Zero Carbon.
- Co-ordinate planning applications including pre-app advice and consultation with local authorities and project teams, strategy development, coordination of deliverables and advice on planning conditions.
- Provide design advice and if required, undertake building physics modelling to assess building performance and indoor environmental conditions (e.g. daylight, overheating, thermal comfort).
- Provide consultancy advice on sustainable issues including materials, water efficiency and waste as well as operational and embodied carbon, and circular economy principles.
- Develop technical reports and produce calculations in line with project needs.
- Prepare and lead technical workshops, presenting findings and recommendations in a clear and concise manner to design teams and clients.
- Ensure continuous improvement and application of the latest thinking and innovations relating to sustainable design and operation of buildings.
- Development of standards and assessment procedures to continuously improve the efficiency and quality of Twin&Earth’s services.

Qualifications/experience/skills
The individual undertaking this role is expected to have the following skills:
- Have a relevant science or engineering degree.
- At least 4 years’ experience in a related role.
- Working knowledge, experience and/or qualifications in building energy modelling packages including IES and SAP.
- Knowledge and experience of energy efficient building design and specification.
- Good understanding of the policy and regulatory landscape relating to sustainable buildings and building energy in the UK.
- Good experience of front line (face to face) delivery to customers.
- Clear communicator – comfortable with presenting to an audience (both written and verbally) on both technical and non-technical matters.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines, independently and as a team member or leader.
- Good experience of analysing complex data.
- Highly motivated, customer focused and willing to take on new challenges.
- Ability to prepare and deliver compelling proposals in writing and in interview situations.
- Ability to contribute to team working and collective objectives.
Desirable skills/qualifications:
- Experience of NABERS and Design for Performance.
- Advanced energy modelling using IES Virtual Environment including NABERS Design for Performance, CIBSE TM54 and LEED energy models using ApacheHVAC.
- Have oversight of energy modelling undertaken by more junior members of staff including developing and adopting robust QA procedures, QA of project models and studies.
- Qualified to produce domestic / non-domestic EPCs. Qualified as a CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant.
- Knowledge of embodied carbon principles and experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) tools, such as One Click LCA.
- Working knowledge of Environmental Assessments including buildings such as BREEAM, LEED, Ska and WELL Building Standard.
- Have BREEAM Assessor qualification and a track record delivering BREEAM certification for projects.
