Senior Client Consultant – LGPS Pensions

Aimed at qualified actuaries with strong Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) experience seeking a distinguished consulting role.

About the Role

You will lead and grow your own portfolio of LGPS clients, with the opportunity to progress into a Team Leader position. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Driving client strategy, managing delivery, and governance activity.
  • Collaborating closely with Partners to set priorities and elevate client relationships.

Join a fast-growing team specialising in LGPS actuarial and governance work, including emerging regulatory-driven projects. Key focus areas include:

  • Funding strategy
  • Employer risk & asset pooling
  • Governance support & employer transitions
  • Statutory reporting

A Snapshot of Your Day

  • Client Consulting: Serve as the primary LGPS accounting/main contact for pension funds and employers, providing bespoke advice.
  • Relationship Building: Develop deep knowledge of client needs.
  • Team Management: Oversee client teams, ensuring high-quality, on-time delivery.
  • Partner Support: Work with Partners to identify and resolve issues (e.g. fee disputes or service concerns).
  • Meetings & Initiatives: Attend client discussions and report emerging opportunities.
  • Specialist Work: Lead internal working groups on topics like LGPS accounting or governance.
  • Risk Assessment: Apply actuarial techniques to evaluate LGPS pension risks.
  • Quality Control: Review work of junior team members for compliance & accuracy.
  • Strategic Advice: Guide clients on achieving objectives while balancing stakeholder needs.
  • Business Development: Explore upsell opportunities with Barnett Waddingham/Howden services.
  • Presentation Skills: Deliver internal briefings, client presentations, and external talks as required.
  • Pitch Support: Assist in securing new business (tenders & proposals).

Requirements

  • Fellowship Qualifications – Must hold a [FIA] or [FAA] (or equivalent).
  • DB Pension Experience – Strong background in defined benefit schemes.
  • Leadership Experience – Proven ability to manage teams and develop people.
  • Technical Proficiency – Excellent IT skills (relevant tools/software).
  • Project & Time Management – Ability to prioritise and deliver under tight deadlines.
  • Communication – Strong networking, client-facing, and internal collaboration skills.
  • Innovation – Eagerness to drive new initiatives.
  • Team Development – Willingness to share knowledge and mentor junior talent.
