Senior Content Specialist

We want more people to discover Ecotricity, understand why we're different and choose to stay with us. We're looking for a senior content specialist who can make that happen through a clear strategy, excellent writing and a sharper approach to organic growth.

You'll be accountable for the performance of our content in organic search, from relevant traffic through to customer enquiries and conversions. You'll set a joined-up direction for our website and organic social channels, rebuild key parts of the website around the subjects our customers care about, and work with colleagues in CRM and Customer teams to create content that helps customers get more value from us.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You'll write the pieces that matter most, guide and edit work produced by freelancers and colleagues, and decide which requests deserve the team's time. You'll also use AI and other tools thoughtfully to make research, briefing, production and review more efficient, while keeping human judgement and appropriate approvals at the centre of the work.

This role is a 12-month fixed-term contract. For this role, you'll need to be based within a reasonable distance and able to travel to our office in Stroud, Gloucestershire, as the role requires weekly office presence.

Core Responsibilities

Organic Growth and Discovery

  • Agree meaningful organic search targets and report regularly on relevant traffic, engagement, enquiries and conversions. Use rankings and visibility to diagnose performance and guide improvements.
  • Use search data, customer questions, site analytics and competitor research to find the topics and pages with the greatest opportunity.
  • Improve content so it is useful and easy to find through search and emerging AI-led discovery. Track what can be measured, test approaches and adapt as the evidence develops.
  • Work with Digital, Product and development colleagues on site structure, internal linking, technical SEO and the performance of key journeys.

Content Strategy and Website Improvement

  • Create a content strategy that connects our website, app and organic social activity to customer acquisition, retention, brand building and Ecotricity's mission.
  • Define a small number of content pillars based on customer needs, commercial priorities and the subjects where Ecotricity has something valuable to say.
  • Audit existing website content. Decide what to keep, improve, combine or remove, then lead the rewrite and restructuring of priority pages, hubs and supporting articles.
  • Write and edit high-impact work yourself, including important landing pages, flagship articles and customer communications. Make complex energy and sustainability subjects clear, accurate and persuasive.
  • Publish and maintain website content through the CMS and use performance data to improve it after publication.

Customer Value and Retention

  • Work with CRM, Customer and other teams on useful content for onboarding, ongoing engagement and renewal.
  • Use customer questions, engagement and churn insight to identify where clearer information could build understanding, confidence and loyalty.
  • Balance content that attracts new customers with content that supports those already with us.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

People, Requests and Ways of Working

  • Brief, schedule and manage freelance writers and specialists. Give useful editorial feedback, maintain high standards and manage freelance spend within the agreed budget.
  • Lead the content request queue. Clarify the purpose and audience of each request, prioritise by impact and urgency, set realistic lead times and challenge briefs constructively when another approach would work better.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Marketing, Digital, Sales, Service and Operations. Make ownership and sign-off clear, particularly for customer information and regulated claims.
  • Improve how work is researched, briefed, written, reviewed and published. Build practical templates, checks and AI-supported workflows, and show where they save time or improve quality.
  • Maintain excellent standards of spelling, grammar, factual accuracy, accessibility and tone of voice. Take editorial responsibility for final work, with the right subject matter and legal approvals where needed.

What Success Looks Like

  • In the first three months: You understand our current search and content performance, have agreed priorities and measures of success, and have a clear content strategy, initial pillars and an orderly request and freelance workflow.
  • By six months: The first priority website sections have been improved; weak or outdated pages are being rewritten, combined or retired; planned work is taking a larger share of capacity; and you can show improvements to the content process and early results from acquisition and retention activity.
  • By the end of the cover: Organic content is making a measurable contribution to agreed traffic and conversion goals. The website has a stronger, more coherent structure, and the team has an editorial plan and documented workflows that it can continue to use.

You're an Excellent Writer and Editor

  • You're an excellent writer and editor who can also set direction and make sound commercial decisions.
  • You're self-motivated, well organised, highly accountable and comfortable moving at pace, while maintaining exceptionally high standards.
  • You're an empathetic relationship builder who can listen, influence, and challenge constructively.
  • You're also comfortable getting into the details of a page, a brief, or a performance report, and you can build strong relationships while staying clear about priorities. You know how to use new tools to make a small team more effective without letting speed compromise accuracy or trust.

Essential Skills

  • Evidence of improving organic search performance and the ability to explain what you did, what changed and how you measured it.
  • Significant experience owning and delivering content strategy for a consumer brand or similarly complex organisation, with evidence that you have already built, improved and scaled a high-performing content operation.
  • Experience developing and delivering content strategy across a website and social channels, including audits, rewrites and ongoing optimisation.
  • Excellent copywriting and editing, with strong spelling, grammar and the ability to explain complicated subjects simply.
  • Working knowledge of SEO, search analytics and how digital discovery is changing. You can work effectively with technical SEO specialists and developers.
  • Experience using AI, automation or other tools to make content workflows more efficient, with appropriate checks and approvals.
  • An understanding of how content can support acquisition, conversion and customer retention.
  • Experience briefing and managing freelancers or other content contributors, and handling competing requests from stakeholders.
  • Confidence using a CMS, Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console, or comparable tools.

Flexibility Statement

The fast moving nature of the business means that from time to time you may be asked to perform duties or tasks outside of your original job description on an ad hoc basis. This allows the company to utilise our people in the best possible way at all times and helps our colleagues to make the best contribution in a changing environment.

Ecotricity is Britain's overall greenest energy company- it’s more than just green energy – the breadth and depth of our work on green issues is unmatched. When we started back in 1995, we were the first company in the world to provide a new kind of electricity - the green kind. Our mission was, and remains, to change the way energy is made and used in Britain - by replacing fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy.

We don't just supply green energy, we use the money from our customers' bills to make it ourselves too – we have built windmills and sun parks in Britain. We call this turning 'bills into mills'. We don't just focus on energy though- we built the Electric Highway, Britain's leading network of electric vehicle charging points; we helped Forest Green Rovers become the greenest football club in the world; and we launched Britain's greenest mobile phone service, Ecotalk, where they use the money from their customers' bills to protect and regenerate Britain's lost rainforests.

Ecotricity is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to providing equality for all.
