Controls Engineer – Special Purpose Machinery

Location: Basildon, Essex

Salary: £65,000 + benefits

Working Pattern: Full-time

We’re working with an established engineering business specialising in bespoke Special Purpose Machinery (SPM), and they’re looking for an experienced Controls Engineer to join their growing team in Basildon.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll be involved throughout the full project lifecycle — from PLC programming and electrical design through to machine commissioning and customer installation.

The Role

  • Develop and program PLC control systems using Siemens TIA Portal
  • Design and develop control systems for bespoke Special Purpose Machinery
  • Work on machine automation, motion control, HMIs and servo systems
  • Produce and modify electrical control documentation
  • Support machine build, testing and commissioning
  • Fault-find and troubleshoot control systems
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical and software engineers
  • Attend customer sites when required for installation and commissioning

About You

  • 5+ years' experience as a Controls / Automation Engineer
  • Strong Siemens TIA Portal and S7 PLC programming experience
  • Proven experience working on Special Purpose Machinery / bespoke machinery projects
  • Good understanding of electrical control systems, sensors, drives and motion
  • Comfortable taking projects from initial design through to commissioning
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability
  • Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team
