Referment is working with a regional law firm to recruit a corporate solicitor for its Stockport team, at either senior associate or partner level. The firm acts for businesses and individuals, advising on corporate and commercial matters alongside commercial property, dispute resolution and employment work.
This is a role for someone ready to lead. You'll handle high-value matters with a strong degree of autonomy, working alongside other members of the corporate team. The firm is open to appointing at either level, so what matters is a track record of running your own deals and a real appetite for business development.
The Role
Day to day, you'll lead a transactional corporate practice covering:

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
- M&A transactions on both the buy and sell side, together with private equity and investment deals.
- Shareholder agreements, group restructures and corporate governance matters.
- Building and maintaining strong, long-term client relationships through clear communication and high-quality service.
- Generating fee income and managing your own financial performance — time recording, work in progress, billing and cash collection — in line with agreed targets.
- An active role in business development: networking, attending events and developing new client relationships.
In other words, you'll own the client relationship as well as the transaction.

What We're Looking For
You'll bring 5+ years' PQE and strong technical expertise across M&A and general corporate matters. Proven experience of managing and running your own transactions is essential — this role hands you the deal lead rather than a supporting brief.
Commercial credibility with senior stakeholders matters too, as does comfort getting out and meeting people: networking, events and new client development are a genuine part of the remit, not an occasional extra.
This could suit a senior associate who already runs their own transactions and wants more autonomy, or an established partner looking for a regional platform with an existing business client base.
