Reporting into the Knowledge Lead for the Litigation & Dispute Resolution division, there is opportunity for the Senior Costs Lawyer to make a meaningful impact across the Firm.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead on costs budgeting and costs management throughout the lifecycle of contentious matters, providing early strategic input to matter teams to support recoverability, proportionality and effective client cost control.
  • Prepare, monitor and update costs estimates and budgets, including advising on variations where required and ensuring legal teams remain aware of key costs milestones, risks and deadlines.
  • Prepare, review and manage bills of costs, detailed assessment bills, schedules of costs, costs budgets, statements of costs, points of dispute and replies across a range of litigation matters.
  • Support fee earners with internal costs queries, costs disputes, negotiations and the review of opponents’ bills, including assessing reasonableness, proportionality and recoverability.
  • Provide strategic advice to partners and fee earners on all aspects of legal costs, including costs management, budgeting, costs recovery, litigation funding and costs risk throughout the lifecycle of contentious matters.
  • Work collaboratively with partners, fee earners and business services teams to develop a more sophisticated and commercially focused approach to costs management across the Firm.
  • Represent the Firm and clients at Costs and Case Management Conferences, detailed assessments and other costs hearings where appropriate, including conducting advocacy on costs-related issues.
  • Where external counsel is instructed, ensure counsel is fully briefed and supported to defend the Firm’s costs budgets, challenge opponents’ budgets and advance the agreed costs strategy.
  • Design and deliver costs training for partners, fee earners and business services teams, including best practice in time recording, budgeting, costs recovery and compliance with relevant costs procedures.
  • Monitor developments in costs law and practice, providing technical guidance, legal research and practical tools to embed consistent, commercially focused best practice across the Firm.
  • Support legal teams with alternative fee arrangements, funding strategies, retainer structures, cost estimates and expenditure monitoring to maximise recoverability and profitability.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
