Senior Data Engineer

Osprey Flight Solutions

Reports to Head of Data

Why this role, why now

Osprey's North Star is direct: to become the trusted decision platform for organisations where lives, assets and operations depend on getting it right. That's not marketing copy, it's the actual bar the data platform has to clear, since the pipelines you'd build feed risk scoring for airlines and insurers, not a dashboard nobody checks.

You'd be building on DataNest, Osprey's cloud-native data platform, across its Bronze, Silver and Gold layers on Azure, as the company moves into its next phase of growth backed by a leading US private equity investor and expands beyond aviation into insurance, government and defence. Azure data engineering is one of the fastest-growing cloud specialisms right now, and this is a genuinely senior mandate within it: not just building pipelines, but shaping how Osprey's data architecture scales as new verticals come online.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, build and maintain scalable pipelines across DataNest's Bronze, Silver and Gold layers.
  • Extend the metadata-driven pipeline (MDP) framework so new data sources onboard fast, not as bespoke builds each time.
  • Build production-grade pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Functions (Python) and SQL Managed Instance.
  • Own the security side: row-level security, RBAC, encryption and least-privilege access, supporting ISO 27001 compliance.
  • Partner with Data Science, Product and Engineering to turn raw data into trusted input for analytics, ML models and client-facing products.
  • Contribute to the bigger bets: new data sources, risk-scoring data delivery to insurers, the migration from legacy AWS systems to Azure, and API building.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What you'll bring

  • Extensive experience designing and building scalable data pipelines in Azure.
  • Strong Python for data engineering, hands-on with Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL Managed Instance and ADLS.
  • A solid grasp of medallion/layered data architecture and metadata-driven, modular ETL frameworks.
  • Working knowledge of DataOps practices: Git, CI/CD, code quality gates.
  • Comfort with data security and compliance practices (RBAC, encryption, audit-ready practices for frameworks like ISO 27001 or SOC 2).
  • Strong SQL, across both relational and semi-structured data.

Even better if you have

  • Data quality testing or frameworks experience.
  • A software engineering background in C#, especially API creation.
  • Exposure to aviation data.

What success looks like in your first year

  • New pipelines shipped and live within DataNest.
  • Genuinely integrated across the wider tech function, not working in a silo.
  • Solid working knowledge of aviation and event data and how Osprey turns it into value for customers.
  • A real voice in shaping strategic and architectural direction, not just executing someone else's roadmap.
