Senior Data Engineer – AWS / Lakehouse
Contract: 3 months | Fully Remote | Outside IR35
We are seeking an experienced Data Engineer for a three-month project delivering cloud-based data engineering and integration solutions. This is a hands-on role requiring strong AWS expertise, practical experience with Apache Iceberg and Apache Spark, and a solid understanding of unstructured data processing and integration patterns.
You will work closely with technical and delivery teams to build reliable data pipelines, develop lakehouse capabilities and integrate data across systems.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and optimise data pipelines using AWS Glue, S3, Lambda and Apache Spark.
- Develop and maintain lakehouse solutions using Apache Iceberg, supporting efficient data ingestion, transformation and access.
- Build workflows for ingesting, processing and transforming unstructured data.
- Develop integrations using API Gateway, Lambda and EventBridge, applying appropriate API-based, event-driven and batch integration patterns.
- Work with Amazon Bedrock to support AI-enabled processing of unstructured data where required.
- Use AWS Systems Manager (SSM) to support configuration and operational requirements.
- Develop and maintain infrastructure as code using Terraform, alongside CI/CD pipelines and GitHub Actions.
- Implement appropriate data quality checks, monitoring, error handling and recovery processes.
- Produce clear technical documentation and support handover at the end of the project.

Required skills and experience
- Strong, hands-on AWS data engineering experience, specifically across Glue, Bedrock, SSM, S3, Lambda, API Gateway and EventBridge.
- Proven experience building lakehouse solutions with Apache Iceberg and Apache Spark.
- A strong understanding of unstructured data processing, including ingestion approaches, transformation, metadata handling and downstream consumption.
- A strong understanding of integration patterns, backed by practical experience delivering integrations between systems and services.
- Working proficiency in Terraform, CI/CD and GitHub Actions, with the ability to contribute independently to deployment and automation workflows.
- Experience building reliable, maintainable data solutions, with attention to performance, security and operational support.
- Ability to work independently in a fully remote team and contribute quickly within a short project engagement.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to translate technical requirements into practical solutions.
