Senior Data Engineer - Medical Imaging / GCP

Location: London - Hybrid (2 days onsite per week)
Contract: Initial contract, extension potential
Day Rate: Up to £782 per day (Umbrella)
Technology: Python, SQL, GCP, BigQuery, Medical Imaging, DICOM

The Opportunity

Harnham is partnering with a leading global organisation in the life sciences sector seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to support a highly specialised data engineering programme involving complex medical imaging and biomedical datasets. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of Data Engineering, Cloud Technology and Medical Imaging, building scalable data solutions that support advanced scientific research and innovation. The successful candidate will combine strong hands-on engineering capabilities with experience working with imaging data or a relevant computational background.

The Role

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Designing, developing and optimising scalable data pipelines using Python, SQL and GCP.
  • Working extensively with BigQuery to process, transform and manage complex datasets.
  • Supporting the ingestion, processing and structuring of medical imaging and biomedical data.
  • Developing robust data engineering solutions for large-scale imaging datasets.
  • Applying data modelling, optimisation and software engineering best practices.
  • Collaborating with technical and scientific stakeholders to deliver reliable, high-performance data solutions.

Your Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Strong commercial experience as a Data Engineer, with advanced Python and SQL capabilities.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), particularly BigQuery.
  • Experience building and optimising scalable data pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, data structures and performance optimisation.
  • You must also meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • A PhD in a computational discipline.
    • An MSc in a computational discipline alongside 2+ years' experience working with imaging data from any industry.
    • 2+ years' hands-on experience working with medical imaging datasets, including DICOM or similar formats.

Desirable:

  • Experience with DICOM or other medical imaging standards.
  • Knowledge of image ontologies, classification or biomedical data structures.
  • Previous experience within life sciences, healthcare, scientific research or medical technology.
