Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer
Contract length: 3 months
Rate: £500-550 (Outside IR35)
We’re supporting a Microsoft Data consultancy that is expanding its data-engineering capability and looking to hire an experienced Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer.
You’ll work across a variety of client-facing Microsoft Fabric implementation projects, supporting organisations within government, construction, financial services, and healthcare.
This is a hands-on consulting role. You’ll be expected to join different client engagements, understand their existing data environments, and help design, build, and implement modern data platforms using Microsoft Fabric.
Responsibilities
- Designing and implementing Microsoft Fabric data platforms for external clients.
- Building Fabric Lakehouse and Warehouse solutions.
- Developing data-ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines.
- Creating notebooks and data-processing workloads using Python and PySpark.
- Implementing medallion and layered data architectures.
- Integrating data from APIs, databases, cloud applications, and file-based sources.
- Supporting migrations from legacy, on-premise, or existing Azure platforms into Microsoft Fabric.
- Establishing engineering standards covering testing, deployment, security, and governance.
- Working closely with architects, analysts, BI developers, and client stakeholders.
- Translating client requirements into practical and maintainable technical solutions.
- Supporting CI/CD and controlled deployments using Azure DevOps or Git.
- Contributing to technical workshops, design decisions, and client-facing delivery meetings.

What we’re looking for
- Strong commercial experience delivering Microsoft Fabric implementations.
- Hands-on experience with Fabric Lakehouse, Warehouse, Data Factory, Data Pipelines, and notebooks.
- Strong SQL skills.
- Commercial Python or PySpark experience.
- Experience designing modern data-platform or lakehouse architectures.
- A strong understanding of medallion architecture and reusable engineering patterns.
- Broader Microsoft Azure data experience, including technologies such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Synapse, Azure SQL, or Databricks.
- Experience delivering greenfield data platforms or migration projects.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- The ability to operate independently within client-facing project environments.
- Comfortable moving between different clients, projects, and industry domains.

Desirable experience
- Azure Databricks and Delta Lake.
- Metadata-driven ingestion or reusable pipeline frameworks.
- Microsoft Fabric security, governance, and deployment processes.
- Power BI semantic models and downstream reporting requirements.
- REST APIs and Azure Functions.
- Microsoft Fabric or Azure data certifications.
- Previous experience working for a consultancy or professional-services organisation.
- Delivery experience across government, construction, financial services, or healthcare.
This initial three-month contract would suit a Senior or Lead Data Engineer who remains technically hands-on and enjoys delivering modern data solutions across a varied portfolio of client projects.
