Senior Data Engineer (Team Lead) - Remote
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Data Engineer (Team Lead) based in United Kingdom.
This remote leadership opportunity is designed for an experienced data engineering professional who can combine deep technical expertise with team management capabilities. You will lead the design, development, and optimization of scalable data solutions while guiding engineers and shaping engineering best practices. The role focuses on distributed data processing, streaming architectures, cloud data platforms, and building reliable data infrastructure. You will collaborate with product, analytics, and engineering teams to define data strategies and deliver impactful solutions. This position is ideal for a technical leader who enjoys solving complex data challenges, mentoring talent, and driving innovation in a fully remote environment.
Accountabilities
As a Senior Data Engineer (Team Lead), you will be responsible for leading data engineering initiatives while contributing hands-on to the development of scalable and reliable data platforms. Your main responsibilities will include:
- Leading a team of data engineers while actively contributing to the design and development of advanced data pipelines.
- Architecting, implementing, and optimizing large-scale streaming and batch data solutions using technologies such as Kafka, Spark, and Hadoop.
- Managing the deployment, monitoring, and optimization of data infrastructure to ensure performance, reliability, and scalability.
- Collaborating with product, analytics, and engineering teams to understand data requirements and define effective data strategies.
- Coaching and mentoring engineers while promoting strong engineering practices, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Establishing and maintaining best practices for data governance, security, compliance, and data quality.
- Identifying opportunities to improve data engineering processes, tooling, and technical standards.
- Supporting architectural decisions and ensuring solutions align with business and technical objectives.
- Communicating technical solutions, progress, and challenges effectively with both technical teams and stakeholders.

Requirements
The ideal candidate is a highly experienced data engineering leader with a strong background in distributed systems and large-scale data solutions. You should bring:
- 6+ years of professional experience in data engineering, including recent experience leading technical teams.
- Strong expertise in Apache Kafka, Apache Spark, and Hadoop ecosystems.
- Hands-on experience designing and maintaining scalable data pipelines and distributed processing systems.
- Experience working with cloud data platforms, with BigQuery experience considered highly desirable.
- Proven success delivering complex data engineering solutions in large-scale environments.
- Strong debugging, troubleshooting, performance optimization, and analytical problem-solving skills.
- Experience mentoring engineers, managing workflows, and supporting team development.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
