I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As a technical leader, you are adept at mentoring and guiding engineering teams, fostering the adoption of best practices while promoting continuous improvement. You have a deep understanding of data architecture, schema design, and the challenges involved in building data-intensive applications that are scalable, highly available, and fault-tolerant. You are experienced in driving modernisation initiatives, including the migration of legacy systems to modern platforms, and can balance the introduction of new technologies with the need to manage risk effectively.

You are comfortable operating in production: diagnosing issues, reasoning about how a single upstream failure can cascade through downstream systems and customer-facing outputs, and making sound judgment calls about remediation under time and customer pressure. You understand the tradeoffs involved in designing data systems for scale and reliability, including how to keep large, multi-tenant, and distributed data systems consistent, isolated, and trustworthy.

Previous professional experience with the following:

  • Data and software engineering experience implementing and maintaining backend systems to build reliable data infrastructures covering some of the following concepts:

    • Data transformations using dbt
    • Data storage technologies (SQL / NoSQL)
    • Schema design and multi-tenant data isolation
    • Back-end engineering (NodeJS / Python / Java / C#)
    • Data Pipelines
    • Experience with streaming and CDCs
    • Data Modelling (SQL)
    • Data validation and quality assurance practices
    • Cloud-native, containerised, or automated batch processing systems
    • Monitoring & Alerting
    • Incident response and RCA for data systems
    • Infrastructure as code (Terraform)
    • Containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Communication. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively advocate technical solutions to Product and Engineering Teams as well as business audiences.

Our Data Stack

Here’s what our data stack currently looks like. As a fast-moving scale up, this will change as we grow and you will be directly contributing to these changes. The ability to learn new tools is more important than previous experience.

  • DBT for data modelling and transformation
  • BigQuery data warehouse
  • Kafka for data streaming between systems
  • PostgreSQL & Mongo for databases
  • Node.JS on the backend
  • Kubernetes
  • Python
  • Segment for customer centric event collection
