Senior Data Scientist (Contract)

3 Months Initial (possibility to extend)

£500 - £600 Per Day

The Company

They are an early-stage AI organisation focused on developing advanced data products for a complex global industry. Their work combines machine learning, data modelling, and modern AI techniques to generate meaningful insights from rich, real-world datasets. With a strong technical culture and deep domain expertise, they are looking for an experienced contractor to help deliver critical data science capabilities at an important stage of growth.

The Role and Deliverables

  • Profile, analyse, and explore complex industrial datasets to identify modelling opportunities and data quality considerations.
  • Establish baseline approaches and define robust evaluation datasets, metrics, and validation frameworks.
  • Build and deploy classification, matching, and inference models for production use.
  • Measure model performance and produce detailed error analysis to support ongoing improvement.
  • Apply LLMs in appropriate use cases such as extraction, constrained labelling, and code generation, supported by clear evaluation processes.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to translate complex business challenges into practical machine learning solutions.

Your Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience building and deploying machine learning models in production environments where accuracy and reliability are critical.
  • Advanced Python skills, including hands-on use of pandas and scikit-learn.
  • Strong statistical knowledge and the ability to design effective validation and evaluation methodologies.
  • Experience assessing model performance, analysing errors, and communicating findings clearly.
  • Capability to build or contribute to LLM-powered workflows with robust evaluation frameworks.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of technical standards and delivery.
  • Ability to work effectively with subject matter experts in unfamiliar domains.
