Senior Data Steward (Grade 12)

This is an opportunity to play a key role during an important period of data transformation, helping shape and embed how Elexon governs its increasingly complex and strategically important data.
You’ll help ensure our critical data is trusted, protected, understood and effectively governed, developing and embedding data governance policies, standards and frameworks while working closely with Data Owners, delivery teams and senior stakeholders to strengthen accountability and data quality across the organisation.
With Elexon preparing to process half-hourly smart meter data from over 30 million customers and expanding its role in sharing energy data with industry, you’ll have the opportunity to make a significant impact over the 24-month assignment, establishing governance practices and capabilities that will support Elexon well into the future.
What you’ll do:
- Develop and embed data governance policies, standards and frameworks across Elexon
- Lead stewardship of critical data products and domains, ensuring clear ownership, definitions, lineage, quality measures and controls
- Use Microsoft Purview and other governance tools to support data discovery, stewardship and assurance
- Lead the implementation and adoption of governance initiatives through effective communications, training and stakeholder engagement
- Support new data solutions through design, delivery and transition into live operation, ensuring governance requirements are implemented effectively
- Test and assure data governance controls, identifying gaps, risks and areas requiring remediation
- Work closely with Data Owners and Data Stewards to strengthen accountability and governance practices
- Drive consistent application of data quality, classification, access and retention requirements
- Ensure governance aligns with UK GDPR, information security and regulatory requirements
- Analyse data quality issues, identify root causes and drive preventative action
- Provide expert advice and constructive challenge on data governance risks, issues and decisions
- Coach colleagues and deliver data literacy activities to strengthen governance capability across Elexon

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
