Senior Database Administrator (AWS | Aurora | PostgreSQL)

Location: London / Croydon (Hybrid)
Contract: Initial 4 month contract
Rate: Competitive Day Rate
Clearance: Active SC Clearance Required

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Database Administrator to join a major public sector transformation programme, supporting the design, optimisation and resilience of mission-critical cloud database platforms.

You'll act as the technical SME for AWS-hosted database environments, taking ownership of architecture, performance, disaster recovery and operational excellence while working alongside cloud engineers, architects and development teams.

The Role

  • Design and implement highly available AWS database solutions.
  • Administer and optimise AWS Aurora, Amazon RDS and PostgreSQL environments.
  • Lead database performance tuning, query optimisation and indexing strategies.
  • Design and maintain backup, recovery, replication and disaster recovery solutions.
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues and perform root cause analysis.
  • Drive database resilience, security and operational best practice.
  • Support data reconciliation, integrity validation and capacity planning.
  • Contribute to architecture reviews and technical governance.

Essential Skills

  • Strong commercial experience with:
    • AWS Aurora
    • Amazon RDS
    • PostgreSQL
  • Database architecture and solution design experience.
  • Performance tuning and SQL optimisation expertise.
  • Database schema design and data modelling.
  • High availability, replication, backup and disaster recovery.
  • AWS services including IAM, CloudWatch, KMS, VPC and Secrets Manager.
  • Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable

  • AWS Database Specialty or AWS Solutions Architect certification.
  • Experience with MySQL, SQL Server, MongoDB or Redis.
  • Previous experience delivering within regulated or public sector environments.

Clearance

Applicants must hold active SC Clearance that has been used within the last six months (or hold active Home Office SC Clearance).
